Turku is the ancient capital and easygoing city on Finland’s southwest coast. Dating from the end of the 13th century, Turku is the oldest city in the country and home to the well-preserved Turku Castle. It's the largest surviving medieval building in Finland and acts as a national monument. Turku is only two hours from Helsinki.
I liked Turku well enough. It was my first stop in Portland, so I mostly caught up on sleep and walked around without much of an agenda.
As the oldest city in Finland, Turku is now a modern city rich in both history and beauty. Cafes, shops, and pubs line the manicured banks of the Aura River throughout the city center. The city's history comes alive during the medieval marketplace that takes place during summer weekends, while naval buffs will enjoy the Maritime Museum (Forum Marinum) located at the port year round. Watch out for special events and exhibitions during Turku's reign as the European Capital of Culture through the end of 2011.
