Dirty, loud, and smelly

I just needed a bed near the airport before an early morning flight. I saw that the reviews were pretty bad, but I thought perhaps these were reviews from foreigners with higher expectations than a newly-developed country can meet (I encountered a few of those folks during my visit), so I booked it anyway. My mistake.
The room was filthy. It clearly had not been cleaned. There were rat droppings in the bathroom and bugs of many varieties throughout the room. It smelled horribly of mildew and mold, and the air conditioner did not cool the room at all. The bathroom water drains out behind the room into what seems to be a stagnant pool which attracts mosquitoes like crazy. I had to slather myself with DEET to survive the night (and I STILL got bitten.) Also - and this is no fault of the hotel itself, but location matters - as one night reasonably expect from a hotel near an international airport, the planes fly right over the Inn and it’s incredibly loud.
When I arrived I let them know I would be leaving at 4:30 am. They offered to get me a taxi for 5,000 kyat, but so close to the airport that’s not a reasonable price. Yes, I realize that’s only $3ish USD, but I paid less than that to get a Grab from the airport all the way to Hledan a few weeks prior, and I’ve been using Grab all month and paying 4,000 kyat for hour-long trips throughout Yangon, so 5,000 kyat for a five minute airport trip seems excessive. I’m pretty sure that’s the foreigner markup, which is why I greatly prefer Grab. In the morning when my Grab arrived, so did another taxi. Apparently they ordered one anyway, and when I indicated that I would be using the Grab I ordered, the proprietor (I think that’s who she was) tried to get me to give the taxi man 1,000 kyat just for showing up. It’s possible that it was a miscommunication since her English was not fluent and I speak no Burmese Beyond please and thank you, but also, she seemed to know the taxi driver, so it’s also possible that she had a vested interest in misunderstanding me. I don’t know.

Basic airport hotel

Close to the Yangon airport. Provides the basic accommodation for a sleep over. A bit older building and not much to offer around at this hotel. The hotel does NOT provide free airport transfer. Sleep and go.

A Bad Experience !!!

We booked online into what we thought was Yangon Airport Hotel including a transfer, Breakfast and wifi. On arrival our transfer was no where to be found. Airport staff helped us and rang the Yangon Airport Hotel but they had no knowledge of our booking or Booking No. Desperate, we looked for more information and found Yangon Airport Inn at the bottom of confirmation email. Once again the Airport Staff got the Airport Inn Phone Number and rang so I could speak to them. Interestingly Yangon Airport Inn address is 18/20 Airport Drive but it is two rough dirt roads off Airport Drive, unlike Yangon Airport Hotel which is on Airport Drive. Not understanding the situation or language all we could do was arrange a taxi to Yangon Airport Inn. We were greeted by a surly receptionist who didn’t even ask our names or greet us in any way. Not too many staying I presumed! When we asked about food, she told us we would have to walk for about 10 mins to a Restaurant (which we found out later was along the two rough dirt roads and with no street lighting). At least the food was okay. In the meantime two young boys in footy shorts about 15 years old took us and our bags to a room on the ground floor. It was very dark, dingy and smelt of mould and cigarettes. The ceiling was covered in huge unclean mirrors. Water was continually running in toilet and filling up and unable to flush. We walked straight out and asked for another room. Room no. 2 was up steep narrow steps and along a verandah, again smelt of smoke, back of curtains stained, windows dirty, had NO water, the shower was broken and it was dirty, the fridge didn’t work, and the TV had one ‘snowy’ Station. We asked to move again to no. 3 room, once again up steep narrow steps. The better of the 3, it still was not clean, soap in shower was old, unable to see in bathroom mirror, dirty marks on walls, cobwebs, mozzies, and an open electrical wire was on wall next to bed. Over three hours from arriving Yangon Airport, we were exhausted, so just called a halt and stayed but left very early. I could go on but not enough space. But only to say on top of the above conditions we got no transfer, no breakfast, and no wifi as advertised by Yangon Airport Inn. The photo shown online of a room in Airport Inn I find hard to believe exists.

pros:
- close to the airport
- aircon in the room
cons:
- run down (bathroom)
- rude staff
- limited breakfast (but you'll get 2 eggs & coffee)
- wifi works only in the reception
- very loud (you hear planes all the time) and loads of mosquitos inside as the room windows are old
We asked them for a taxi to the city centre and they quoted 40.000 kyat, we got on on the street for.. 3.000
There is a Friendship restaurant near by with nice food though for dinner for 2 we paid 12000+drinks.
