With a few light touches a good stay would've been a great stay
After three weeks touring Tasmania and Victoria and staying in a variety of accommodation The Broken Banyan was the only place not to supply these things.
On reviews it looks like the washing machine has not been fixed since September 2025 for the cost of staying at Broken Banyan the least we would've expected is a starter pack.
Would've been helpful if we had been told on arrival that the basics were at our cost.
We accept Lord Howe Island has many costs mainland Australia doesn't incur but given the cost of accommodation it's a fine line between not feeling ripped off and the owner making a reasonable profit to offset their costs.
Barbara was a great host picking and dropping us off at the airport, as well as dropping us off at a couple of restaurants. The restaurants deliver you back to your accommodation.
The actual accommodation is quite dated, but with a little TLC could be so much better - a rug in the lounge, pictures on the walls and increased wattage for the light bulbs. The apartment because of the trees is dark. The gardens and bird life were what made our stay.
The Broken Banyan sits at the top of a steep hill - if you have any mobility issues this is not the place to stay. Everything in the village is within walking distance - just remember that everything you buy has to be carried back up the hill.
Best way to get around the island is by bike - AUD 12 per day from Wilson's - don't however expect much in the way of a quality bike. Need internet, best bets are the Coral Cafe, Anchorage or Jim's - all I suspect are Starlink.
All in all, we had good stay on Lord Howe, but with a few light touches a good stay would've been a great stay.

For a relaxing stay the Broken Banyan is hard to beat
Peaceful garden setting for the 6 well-equipped units. Barbara and her dog Charlotte will certainly make you feel both welcome and at home.
We love the self-catering as it gives the opportunity to shop locally and really get to live the island life. If you want to sample one of the excellent restaurants on the island Barbara will drive you to the restaurant and the restaurants will see you home again.
Great place to stay and our home away from home.

A great place to drop off the planet and relax
From our first visit we liked the lovely 2 acres of gardens and lawns. Barbara treats all guests like family and for us it is like coming home for Christmas.
The Broken Banyan is self-catering. We love nothing better than a BBQ in the garden of an evening watching the returning birds overhead. The units are comfortable and very well set-out.
One of the big advantages of self catering is you can meet the locals as you gather food for your evening meal. Local produce is easy to come-by including local fish, tomatoes, and occasionally beef to mention a few. There are some killer home-made preserves available too!
If you are into restaurants then the island has a good selection and Barbara will drive you to your restaurant of choice each evening.
Barbara and the Broken Banyan offer you a "real" island experience. This is not some generic 5-star offering but the real deal Lord Howe.
If you like the independence of doing your own "thing" then the Broken Banyan is the place to stay for your authentic Lord Howe experience.
Oh, almost forgot - you need at least a week to enjoy the island experience and preferably a few weeks if you have the time.
