3 lovely days
The structure is situated about 15mins drive from Tegel airport (22€ by taxi). It is a family-run business, very clean and taken care of by a lovely and charming Russian lady, who is genuinely eager to make her guests feel very welcome.
Check in starts at 2pm; I was a bit early but I was kindly greeted and allowed in anyway. The owner understands some basic English but communicates in German, wvich I don't speak... Anyway, there was no major problem.
My room was lovely! Very clean, comfortable bed, and a nice balcony. The bathroom is compact and very clean too. There was an extra blanket in the wardrobe, which I did not use: the room is exposed to the sun and gets pretty warm during the day. In any case, the heater works very well.
Breakfast was also nice and with a good variety of spreads and savoury and sweet foods: eggs, yoghurts, salami, cured ham, cheeses, tomatoes, cucumber, biscuits, cake, hot chocolate, coffee, several teas, jams, honey, fresh fruit, good cereals selection, white and rye bread... Excellent choice for such a small pension!
A few aspects which did not constitute an issue for me, but they may concern other people: there is no lift, so the place may not be suitable for wheelchairs users. Like in any other small structure, hot water is mostly available in the morning and from the late afternoon. The reception has limited opening hours, but guests have their own key to get in and out, and keys can be collected by guests arriving out of their business hours.
I had read 2 awful reviews on Tripadvisor, and I must say I totally disagree with them. If people expect a hotel environment from a pension, it is obvious they are not going to find it, and penalising a structure for such reason is unfair. I am evaluation Berl Inn for what it is, a pension: and as a pension, it is a great and good value alternative to hotels.

Fulfils a person's (very) basic needs
However, the state of the hotel is unfortunately pretty run down and very obviously very old. An obvious example of this is the towels, which were almost threadbare. I don't know what it is about this hotel but it's sound carrying abilities are impressive - the first in the hotel to wake up effectively means morning for everyone else too.
I am a pretty basic person, I don't need a lot, but this unfortunately fell below my level of satisfaction. I was hoping to stray away from the normal branded hotels (of a known quality) and hopefully find something a bit different, cosy and with character. Unfortunate that it didn't work out.

Uniquement en cas d’extrême nécessité
Contraint d’y passer une semaine pour le travail, plus jamais je n’y remettrais les pieds. Touriste, passe ton chemin.
