Colonial Style!
The service was fabulous- so attentive. Brealgast was superb, drinks were great. We enjoyed the daily yoga and the bathhouse and massages were superb. Lots of tearful little rituals and thoughtful daily gifts. Really lovely staff. This is our first Aman stay and we loved it!

Not worth
Its nice and clean and has a very small swimming pool
Why would anyone will want to stay here ??

Regarding yor concern about our pool, I believe you may have been shown one of our plunge pools at the hydrotherapy suites. Our swimming pool on the other hand, is one of the largest swimming pools in the Fort, measuring 21m in length. On your next visit, I would be glad to show it to you.

A landmark birthday celebration in a place that felt like home
From the start with the email communications from the group, the experience felt personal and connected. When we arrived, weary from a day’s travel from Negombo, we were greeted with a traditional oil ritual by our butler, Kasun, who remained with us during our stay. Following this, we were ushered straight to afternoon tea on the verandah and felt immediately restored. From that moment on, we felt completely taken care of.
Our top 5 experiences at Amangalla:
1) The staff.
The Amangalla team’s warmth and kindness is what makes this property unforgettable. From Sritala at the front desk, to our incredible butler Kasun, to Harsha, the Assistant Food and Beverage Manager who orchestrated a memorable birthday dinner experience for Sam, to Prasad at the pool, and Kaya, the gracious and sweet General Manager, we felt like part of the family. But there were so many others who made our stay special. Each time we returned from exploring Galle, it felt like coming home. Staff would excitedly gather around us to ask us about our day in an authentic and meaningful way. It was the small touches, like having a surprise warm bath with flower petals waiting for us, or remembering our breakfast preferences that set Amangalla apart.
2) The Paddy Island traditional roti dinner and cultural show.
This was a bit of a splurge, but it was Sam’s 40th and our friend Anna generously contributed to this unforgettable evening. This began with a 20-minute drive into the countryside to Aman’s property surrounded by rice paddies. We were welcomed with traditional Sri Lankan drumming, followed by a traditional dance performance with local musicians. What followed was a delicious multi-course traditional Sri Lankan meal, served by familiar faces from Amangalla. As we departed, we were escorted by shimmering fireflies lighting up the fields. This was a storybook ending to an unforgettable night.
3) The spa and pool.
Aman properties are known for their pools, each different in their own way and characteristic of the location it inhabits. However, this one felt special. The deep green water framed by lush vegetation created a tranquil oasis. Prasad and the team provided attentive yet unobtrusive service. The temperature was perfect and we could have honestly stayed in the pool all day (and all night).
The spa facilities are stunning and are unique as they comprise private suites with wet and dry saunas, hot and cold pools with water features. These are made by appointment only. Our butler Kasun checked in with us every day and he easily arranged these. Sam had a couple of massages and said they were among the best he’s ever had.
4) The food.
We had read some mixed reviews beforehand, but our food experience was consistently outstanding. Breakfasts and dinners were delicious, and we particularly enjoyed the Sri Lankan dishes – hoppers, curries, fresh roti, fragrant rice dishes were all well prepared and flavorful. Afternoon tea on the historic verandah was something we particularly enjoyed. The homemade scones, jam and clotted cream transported us back in time. Don’t skip this.
5) The Galle fort walk.
One of our top experiences was the evening fort walk with Kasun. Wandering through the 400+ year-old UNESCO-protected Galle Fort, watching locals take their evening scrolls, hearing laughter, spotting peacocks, learning about the history of the old churches and buildings as the sun was setting was magical. It also gave us time to connect more personally with Kasun and to learn about Sri Lanka through his eyes.
Bottom line: Amangalla was the highlight of our Sri Lankan journey. Some have critiqued Amangalla saying that it is a restored historic hotel rather than a remote resort setting as typical of other Aman properties. But for us, that was exactly the superpower that set Amangalla apart: the feeling of a more cohesive and family-like staff in a luxurious setting, filled with stories of a colorful past. Our final sendoff with Kaya and many of the staff to say goodbye was deeply touching and emotional.
We can’t wait to return.

Not up to aman standards
It’s defo not aman standard! It’s lovely but doesn’t meet the exuberant aman luxury. We stayed in the amangalle suit. It’s a long way up on narrow stairs. We struggled with mum aged 80! They had been advised of limited stairs!
Oil burner -didn’t replace candle even when left it out
Bedroom/bathroom Floor needed a paint
Pool stunning. Very attentive. Huge area with attention To detail
Book spa in advance. We couldn’t get in!
Food was average.
Plenty of other places to eat in the fort-so be adventurous!
Galle is fabulous. Wish we had stayed in the fort longer

Thank you for taking the time to share your reflections. I am pleased you found the building spectacular and enjoyed the pool area and the attentiveness of the team there-it is indeed a special part of the property, and your recognition means a great deal.
At the same time, I take your comments seriously. The matter of the stairs is particularly important. When we are advised of limited mobility, we should ensure the room allocation reflects this as far as possible. I regret that this was not handled more thoughtfully, especially given your mother’s age.
Your observations regarding your room are also noted. The heritage nature of the building requires ongoing care, and I will ensure the specific suite is reviewed promptly.
I am sorry you were unable to secure a spa appointment during your stay. Our spa is very much in demand, particularly in peak periods, and appointments can fill quickly. We do encourage advance reservations.
Regarding the food, I appreciate the candid feedback. While many guests value the dining experience, consistency is key, and I will review this with the culinary team.
I am, however, delighted that you enjoyed Galle Fort and the sense of place. It is a remarkable setting, and I am glad you were able to appreciate its charm.
