Avoid until the hotel shapes itself up!

Location was great but so are all the other pub/hotels on the high street. Didn’t realise one of Britains most haunted, luckily reading the history most sightings found in rooms 28-32 we were in 1. On arrival we knew the hotel had poor reviews however we only paid £69.99 booked well in advance for a charity walk we had planned and purely intended to sleep and go early. However on the day the cost to stay when I looked was £158!! I would have definitely complained at the state and smell of our room if I had paid that. On arrival we were early so asked if we could leave our bags while we looked around. That was fine with the staff, however instead of putting them away they left our bags in the porch for anyone to take passing by. We checked in at 15.00 leading to our room it was dark, smelt of over powering mould and carpets and walls visibly dirty. Even our key card to get into the room was dirty. The room was so dark curtains drawn and the light only had one bulb working. The whole room was dusty like thick dust on bedside tables, mirror, bedside lamps covered in dust. Then we opened the bathroom door the smell was foul like rotten. We had to open the window fully and run the shower adding hand soap to try and get rid of the smell. Eventually it did go so we assume the shower hadn’t been run in a long time. The shower had a lot of mould which needs bleaching. The floor was laminate but didn’t feel safe to walk around bare foot. We felt bad and sorry for the staff but this needs serious attention it costs nothing to clean and dust other people’s skin away. The kettle provided was clean and new looking, as were the mugs. The hotel deco was strange and hanging off walls, for the area it wouldn’t take much to make this place ten times better. We did like the coffee and tea provided, a little biscuit or two would be an extra nice touch. The bedding was clean and the towels but the surroundings were not. The mattress was very uncomfortable I woke all night from hip and back pain.
We went out for our meal having read the reviews and heard negative reviews from other shop owners around the town. We don’t like to be judgemental but looking at our room we realised the views were probably true. We returned to the door to the hotel being locked with a passkey entry we didn’t have the code. Eventually someone who was just leaving the hotel let us in.
At around 22.00 we just settling down for the night we heard a couple shouting at the hotel staff next door to our room. Which really upset and scared us. Apparently the woman had been moved rooms and this room had glass all over the floor. Shouting for a refund. Then 22.30 a hoover dragged along and heard the whole room hoovered I was tempted to ask for ours to be cleaned at that point. Then later I didn’t look at clock as had to be up early for our walk, a couple trying to get in there room couldn’t. Then a hotel worker helping it was just so loud then he came back and knocked on there door with something else. Overall the hotel needs cleaned, redecorated and some serious attention to details. We only met two workers both friendly but one had very little English so he really struggled to help people. I think they purely change the beds and towels and cups and the rest is left.

Terrible dirty hotel

No staff around when we checked in, either at reception or in the bar. Seemed to have no knowledge of our booking, very disorganised. The hotel is dirty and smelly, with stains on ceilings, dirty toilet, filthy walls and doors, skirting boards hanging off walls, a definite health hazard. Unsure how it meets hygiene or safety standards. We would not have stayed but had just completed a 23 mile charity walk. Under no circumstances would we eat here!!!

Not sure how it got 3 stars

A real life Fawlty Towers experience. Took about half an hour to get checked in as there was only one staff member on duty who had to ring someone else multiple times to find out what to do.
Bedrooms were very basic, with lots of maintenance issues.
Seems like the walls are very thin as we could hear every bit of the conversations from the room next door.
On the positive side - bathroom was clean, shower was powerful and warm, bed was comfy.

The staff were polite enough. Enjoyed talking to them, but, it states parking, there was no parking. There is street parking but not specific to the hotel, so first come first serve on the street. Rooms were tidy but cuboard under the sink was full of mold. Lots of holes in walls and I pointed at to one member of staff the waterfall coming from upstairs in the hallway (it was a dry day so maybe a shower overflow?). Dinner was good but was a struggle trying to get attention. No toilet roll in rooms but you can ask a staff member.

When we arrived we were a little concerned as the staff member that greeted us was in tracksuit bottoms and a NFL top, we thought he was a guest to start with as he was just wandering around. It turned out he was the only member of staff all night, although he was nice enough its not good to have just one person doing front of house, bar, waiting on tables and cooking food!
The hotel is in serious need of refurbishment, very dirty and untidy.
Spoke to local residence and it has a very bad reputation I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.
