The room was very clean and comfortable.
No air conditioning but there was a powerful fan which worked well in 25 degrees.
Our only gripe was no milk in the room for tea/coffee. We could have asked downstairs but just had black tea.
All in all, a good stay and we will return.

Beautiful pub, shame about the service

We visited the The Crown at Bildeston recently while passing through with friends. It’s a beautiful building, and although we haven’t eaten here in years (since Chris and Hayley managed it), we were keen to stop for a drink and potentially some food.
On arrival, we were greeted by a barmaid who seemed fairly friendly, and service was initially quick. We ordered drinks and sat by the open fireplace, which was absolutely perfect and made for a lovely setting.
At first, the bar was relatively quiet, but as it was a Friday afternoon, it soon became busy. Unfortunately, this is where things changed. When we tried to order another drink and enquire about food, we really struggled to get any attention. The same young blonde barmaid appeared to focus on customers at the back bar, and we felt completely overlooked.
It also seemed she became more relaxed with certain patrons, at times drinking with them and using language that didn’t feel appropriate for someone working behind the bar. After waiting a while and feeling increasingly ignored, we decided to leave.
It was disappointing, as we had intended to stay for dinner, but ultimately felt we weren’t a priority. Sadly, this meant the pub lost four dinner guests that evening due to inattentive service and a lack of urgency.

Really enjoyable Christmas Day lunch.

This year for the first time we decided to go out to a restaurant for lunch on Christmas Day. Not many places were open so we booked The Crown sight unseen, never having visited it before. So, a bit of a risk and also a 50 minute drive away from our home. We needn't have worried, our drive took us through pretty Suffolk villages in bright winter sunshine, and we arrived at The Crown to a warm and welcoming dining room and equally welcome champagne and canapés. The young, friendly and enthusiastic staff were unfailingly cheerful and helped to make our meal relaxed and enjoyable. Our preordered bottles of wine were already on the table and food arrived at a measured pace so we could take our time and enjoy the Christmas experience. A gentle hubbub from the pub bar in the next room added to the atmosphere.
Our food was good, venison tartare among the starters, perfectly cooked turbot and beef Wellington for the mains. Portions were generous without the overload of food you often get in pub restaurants. The price was reasonable considering it was Christmas Day, which always carries a premium.
We left delighted with our Christmas Day experience and are looking forward to going back for a more casual meal, but we would thoroughly recommend it for anyone looking to escape the rigours of home cooked Christmas dinner!

It’s hard to find any faults with The Crown at Bildeston

It was sheer luck that we chose the Crown, and we’re so glad we did. From the minute we arrived and found our comfy spacious bedroom, situated at the back of the building away from the busy road we knew it was a good choice. It was very peaceful. There was a super coffee machine, fresh milk and delicious shortbread, a comfy bed and spacious well equipped bathroom.
We ate on 3 out of the 4 nights that we stayed. ! And on every one of those we had absolutely delicious food, trying different things every night. Must mention the duck, cheese board and the chocolate mille feuille.
It’s very hard to pick out any individual staff member, it’s a young team and without exception they tried their best to make us comfortable and see to our every need. It’s always good to hear a manager say “we have a good team here”.
This isn’t a cheap place, but we felt that for the service, food and ambiance we had, it was definitely well worth the money.
This is a characterful hotel in a beautiful part of the country, run by a company that succeeds in giving its customers a memorable experience , so much so that it would be wonderful to visit again one day. Thanks everyone at The Crown.

Bar full of disruptive drunks

Should have been lovely, but ruined by group of drunks who the hotel was more than happy to continue serving shots to. Booked a romantic night away with my partner for her birthday. Took our dog which, understandably, meant that we ate in the hotel bar. Hadn’t realised though that this was not some atmospheric countryside bar, but the sort of place that noisy, swearing, disruptive folk are also allowed. The hotel need to decide who they want as their customers because no way I’ll return here.
