Best Budget Location to Stay In Can Tho

We initially booked a 1 night stay here as a pit stop on our mega tour around Vietnam. We paid 460k VND (apx $20) for that one night, but decided to extend our stay for 2 more nights as we managed to work out a rate with them for 350k VND/night.
The highlight of this hotel is definitely the location! We personally find this is the most budget friendly hotel along the popular downtown Can Tho strip. All the surrounding hotels are easily charging x3 to x4 more in price. As more active explorers, we were outside exploring and maximizing most of our time in the city, so we didn't really need a fancy hotel other than have a hot shower and sleep for the night. Which is what the hotel provided adequately. The rooms are very worn, so pictures from the hotels.com site are not reliable. There is also hot shower with decent water pressure, but the water heater is known to make some loud noises when turned on. The bed was firm, sheets were clean. Wifi was surprising fast! And we are comparing speeds with luxury hotels we had stayed in HCM city.
We were assigned to Room 114, a superior room with windows. We highly recommend taking these rooms, they face the back and courtyard of the building, so you are spared from the loud noises on the street at night, and the early morning dancing troupe at the HCM square. The downside is these windows won't open, but at least you will get natural light. Some rooms DO NOT have windows, we managed to take a peek at them, and they all look very very depressing, so definitely fork out a few more dollars for the rooms with windows.
There are night markets, Circle K, ATM, plenty of restaurants and Cafes all within 5 minutes walk away. Our favorite place to dine is Hoa Chua Cafe, a 5 minute walk away, they serve one of the best pork vermicelli bowls and spring rolls for reasonable prices that don't break the bank.

Couldn't be more central

Can Tho is larger than you'd think, and I'd considered staying a bit out of the centre. But I'm glad to have chosen the Tay Ho for its location.
Arriving at 8pm without a reservation due to an unhelpful bank blocking my credit card, I was surprised to be offered one of the few rooms with a big balcony overlooking the golden statue of Uncle Ho. Room 103 is classed as superior and the room rate was 500k dong a night. From what I could see, most of the other rooms were windowless.
You enter from the balcony and the room fittings,while a little old-fashioned, were fine; and I had a wardrobe, the first for a fortnight. The room was a generous size. Bathroom was OK, although the shower did take a long time to drain. You’ll not be short of company - there were plenty of geckos everywhere. The view from the balcony captured the river and the evening bustle and was attractive, with most activity subsiding around midnight.
Until 5.30am. The lack of adequate glazing/soundproofing was immediately evident. Loud music was being played, almost as a call to get up. I reached for earplugs. But after about half an hour it stopped. Same thing happened both mornings. Apparently there's an exercise class across the road.
So I couldn’t recommend for an unbroken night’s sleep. But do recommend the Mekong restaurant next door.
Couple of tips. The Vietin bank round the corner on Durong Ngo Quyen only changes US and AUS dollars (Vietcombank on Hoa Binh welcomed most currencies). And if like me, this was your first stop after Cambodia and you’re seeking a Vietnamese SIM card, the Viettel store on Durong 30 Thang 4 DOESN’T supply to foreigners - go to their store on the corner of Tran Phu and Le Loi.

Excellent location....shame about the room

Stayed here for one night and then changed hotel. Friendly staff. Dirty room. Unable to open shutters in window. Gaps in door. Dirty and non existent grouting in bathroom. No table or chairs on balcony. Cigarette stubs in plant pots.

Great location, good value

I have been to Can Tho before so took a gamble on this hotel for its location and I will definitely stay there again. The daytime receptionist girls speak English and are very pleasant. The hotel is right on the river opposite Uncle Ho statue, so a busy spot for Vietnamese and other tourists. EArly mornings with loud music for local ladies exercise (5.30am) but that’s ok with me. Lots of street noise till about 11pm at night but then everyone goes to bed and no problem. Room is relevant to price. Bed ok and free water each day. As I said I will stay again.

Location hard to beat

I had booked this hotel months in advance by phone as I couldn't find any direct or indirect booking method , but in reality the booking probably wasn't really confirmed until a few days earlier when I rang to check. The key to this hotel is the location and to a lesser extent the price. It doesn't really have a lot more to offer as the hotel is very old and in very poor condition, but that said the room and bathroom were very clean and comfortable. I booked a 'upper deluxe' room (use the term loosely ....) which had a rickety old balcony with two rickety old chairs facing the river - so after arriving on a great bus service (Futa) from HCMC direct to the door, I nicked downstairs to a small shop and bought a few cold beers, then sitting down in the heat overlooking the river was worth a million dollars, or a million dong at least ...if not looking for anything flash but at a reasonable price in a fab location then this is the go.
