No-frills Stay for a Good Night's Rest
I stayed here for two nights while visiting Nagoya. This hostel is a no-frills affair which provides you with a hot bath of strong water pressure and a good night’s sleep in an aircon room. The guests are assigned to four pax per room, which minimizes noise and increases the comfort level for the individual. That said, some noise is inevitable but thankfully, most of the guests in my room are quiet and I even managed to chat with a local using my rusty Japanese.
The bed lamp on my bed didn’t work so that’s a shame. In the bathroom, there are no clothes hooks and the sensor light keeps shutting off when I am sitting on the throne. The common rooms in the basement and kitchen looks well equipped but small, so I didn't try to work on my laptop at all.
Some staff are more friendly than others, but all are polite and speaks some English. We are required to change to slippers at the entrance and happily, there is a bench to sit for our convenience. The useful navigational information pasted near the reception was also a nice touch.

Alright place
The location is alright. It takes about 15 to 25 minutes to walk from the Willerexpress bus stop or the railway station. The spaces are really small, for instance the living room is like a 'bunk bed' with two wooden floors on top of one another in front of a makeshift kitchen. There are lots of books. You have to pay extra for the gas, though. The laundry machines are on top of the roof. The bathrooms/showers are not the nicest to look at, creak and smell of sour cleaning stuff. All that being said, the people staying and working here were lovely and enjoyed their stay. The hostel as a charm of its own and there is a small cafe downstairs.

Creaky floors and in need of a clean, worst hostel so far
This place is not too far from Nagoya station (20 min walk). The rooms are quite small, bathrooms are really old and not so pleasant to shower in, toilets smell of urine because it has a urinal that is not cleaned.The reception area/ common room is very small. The floors are very creaky so don't expect a peaceful sleep.
The kitchen is small. They have a washing machine and roof to hang your clothes which is good. Staff are friendly.
If you are staying on the ground floor- there is no wifi in the bedroom.
It's not a great place to stay for long.

Cheap & cheerful
Unless you are looking for a place to hang out in all day, this place is adequate cheap accommodation in Nagoya. Rent a mamachari bike for 400 ¥ a day and see the city -- very few hills and lots of places to park a bike. It is about as clean and spacious as many budget-level hostels I've stayed in. The common room is a charming Japanese-style sitting room great for net surfing and socializing. Learn some basic Japanese to make your communication with the staff better.
Is it central? Not really. Is it safe? Yes. Helpful staff? Yes, but it helps to know some basic Japanese.
Close to several interesting temples, including Osu Kannon with amazing budget shopping malls nearby. There are several kombinis nearby for emergency beer and coffee supplies. The udon house next door is a friendly family-run business with very good homemade food. Again, some Japanese will help you here.

A lot has improved! A wonderful and memorable guesthouse.
This is a Japanese-style backpacker's hostel located in central Nagoya. Reading the older reviews, I was a bit apprehensive about booking two nights here. However, the location was close to my job interview so I went ahead and took a risk. Upon arrival, I found that a lot has changed at this hostel since those reviews. My stay at the Otohata Guesthouse was wonderful!
The owner and workers are kind, easy-going people who have been all over the world. Ask them where they have been and where they are headed, they will have interesting stories to tell. Most workers are actually volunteer-travelers and so turnover seems frequent. There may or may not be good English speaking staff during your visit, but they will try their best for you no matter what. Just be patient and understanding. :) I speak a decent amount of Japanese so this was not a concern for me. They were very kind, and helped me out quite a bit.
A lot of thought has gone into the design of guesthouse, and the building has a ton of character. The interior is beautiful! The bathrooms have been redone recently and were very clean. The sinks and toilets look brand new. Hot water in the shower was not an issue. There were shampoos and soaps in the shower, though I brought my own. Just don't forget your own towel, or else you can buy/rent one.
I stayed in the female dormitory on the ground floor. The Japanese-style futon bedding was soft and comfortable. There is no air conditioning, but some bunks had electric fans. I slept fine without one. There are shelves for each bunk where you can put your bags. You also get a locker in the hallway to store valuables. The wooden floorboards in the hallway are still quite squeaky, but this only bothered me when I came back to the room late and worried about waking everyone up.
The Japanese-style common room on the ground floor is small but lovely. I enjoyed sitting there mornings and nights to check my email using the wifi and to chat with other travelers. There is also a dining room/kitchen on the upper floor and rooftop access, but I did not spend much time at either because my room was on the ground floor. The bench outside the building is also a nice place to sit, relax, and make new friends. it's very easy to meet people and make new friends at this guest house. :)
Guests tend to stay up late in the common room to chat and drink. How loud it gets depends on who is there. Sometimes it gets very noisy, sometimes it does not. You must know, it's never the staff that is noisy. It's other guests! One night, there was a fun but noisy group from Korea in the common room until very late. The next morning, another guest assumed they had been part of the guesthouse staff and complained about the noisy "staff party". In fact, none of the staff had been up late that night.
The neighborhood immediately surrounding the neighborhood is unremarkable but quiet, and safe. Next to the hotel is also a nice-looking udon shop, which I did not get to try. I didn't see any brothels as another reviewer had complained, though there are some love hotels. The nearest convenience store is just 5 minutes away. Most restaurants and shopping are not in the immediate neighborhood, but not far either. The Osukanon Temple area is a popular area for both, maybe ten minutes away by foot.
The nearest subway station is Osukannon. It's about 5 minutes away by foot. I did not use the local trains much. Instead, I rented a bike from the guesthouse for 400 yen and spent the day cycling around Nagoya. A pleasant way to explore the city! Nagoya is very bicycle-friendly.
To sum it up, my trip to Nagoya was phenomenal, and I owe it all to the Otohaya Guesthouse. It was a short stay, but one of the most memorable thus far in my travels. Nagoya is not the most exciting city for site-seeing, but all the amazing people I met at this guesthouse, both staff and guests, made the experience unforgettable.
