As part of our check-in policy, we do require a valid credit or debit card for this pre-authorisation, and we also accept Google Pay and Apple Pay. Cash is, as you're aware, not accepted for this.
As explained when you were at the desk, the £25 is not a charge but a pre-authorisation hold, which is standard practice at many hotels to cover any incidentals or extras during a stay. The amount is automatically released by the bank after check-out if unused. This wording is specified as such because it is meant for any charges not already covered by payment arrangements made upon booking, e.g. extra drinks, laundry, possible damages to the room, et cetera. We understand you were not informed by the travel agent, however it is expected by many hotels to provide such things, even if there is already a corporate card for bill-back of previously-agreed charges.
We appreciate your comments and understand the frustration caused on this occasion, however this policy is applied across all reservation types indiscriminately to ensure we are treating no guest differently than the next.
