Accommodation with Character in Valle do Capao
In the Valle do Capao on the western side of Chapada Diamentina National Park, there is intense competition for guests to stay at the posadas, or houses or inns. So, on the surface, it seems they couldn’t all possibly survive as businesses, especially with the lengths the owners go to catering their properties with beautiful gardens.
When searching for a place to stay in the valley, the appearance of Castelar de Alvorada was too quaint to resist, so we chose it as our base camp for exploring the national park. The castle is 4 kilometres shy of Capao Village and about 16 kilometres from Palmeiras. It is handy to the Fumaca waterfall trail, the Rianchinho waterfall with a pool for swimming at the base of the falls. It is also handy to some of the noteworthy attractions in the area, such as Inacio lookout, Lapa Doce Cave and Pratinha (see my Lencois review).
The grounds of the castle are immaculate and the garden must be one of the best in the valley. It also has an amazing swimming pool that is just so unexpected. The buildings are pure charm.
Our room had 2 levels, the lower like an entry to house the suitcases and with a large bathroom with walk in shower and spa bath. The upper level had a large bed and sitting area, fridge, and balcony with a hammock. The steps to the upper level are steep. It adds to the charm but may be tricky for some. The upper-level floors creak like an old house but there is nothing musty about the rooms. There is also an air conditioner and television. The sleep was serene with no extraneous noises from outside.
An expansive breakfast is included, with eggs also available on request. Make sure you try out the milk cake. Also, nearly all of the breakfast food was gluten free.
Dinner was not provided during our stay in mid-May as we were the only guests, though they did offer a delivery option. I assume that during busier times this would not be the case. It helps to have your own car to get to the village and attractions. We had a private tour with Discover Chapada Diamantina and the guide kindly transported us to the village for dinner each of the 3 nights we stayed. There is a taxi and Uber in the village also.
Water pressure in the shower was satisfactory.
We paid $US100 per night for the stay, which was reasonable.
There are so many places to choose from if heading for Capao. The Castelar de Alvorada should definitely be on your list of accommodation options for a peaceful and picturesque experience.

Good option depending on the price you pay
Friendly staff, basic accommodation and OK breakfast
Overall the place is ok, but when you pay 450 Reais a night, then you expect better. We checked again the prices online after staying at the hotel and found out that the usual price for our room is almost half, and that would have been fair. It was a bank holiday weekend when we visited, so I guess that might explain the price difference...
So our experience is qualified by the fact that we expected a level of accommodation that would reflect the price we actually paid and that was not what we got. If you pay the fair price, then it's a good option for this area, however the property should reflect on its pricing policy, as that has a real effect on the customer experience...

Absolutely quiet place, lovely staff. Large chalet rooms
Perfect to visit the area and for whoever want to have a quiet place to enjoy (maybe even too quiet).
We had a nice chalet with two separated rooms, very convenient although beds where not so comfortable and decoration a bit poor.
However it is very large and completely embedded in the nature. Very friendly staff; and a nice large pool (chilly in the winters).
Excellent breakfast. What else ?

This place is calm, and beauty, a place to disconnect from the e-mails and Facebook and to explore the natural beauty of the Vale do Capão.
Vale do Capão is a small village it is found in the beautiful region of the Chapada Diamantina, State of Bahia (about 6h drive from the capital Salvador). The Alvorada is located a bit far from the village, and you will need a car (best option to move around) or a bicycle, the possible taxi can be helpful but not the greatest choice.
I liked the accommodation for three nights; it is clean, well maintained with a high attention to details wich is not common in the entire country.
Staff members are the top up, with great tips about activities, where to go and to eat. I would say that sometimes the reception is left unattended, but not a problem.

Unique lodgings in Chapada Diamantina
This is a great place to stay if you're visiting the western side of Chapada Diamantina. There's excellent hiking in the area, and the pousada has an English-speaking guide on site who can take you on tours. The grounds are beautiful, with a swimming pool, swing, sweat lodge and a quiet stream covered with purple flowers. The prices are very reasonable too.
I'd happily recommend Castelar da Alvorada, but we found a couple shortcomings that kept us from giving it an "excellent" rating. First, the room could use some maintenance. The roof leaked a little (albeit during an extremely heavy thunderstorm), some of the light fixture covering on the ceiling fan was cracked, and the hose next to the toilet leaked. Second, while the staff were very friendly and helpful, the pousada is more or less run by one person, and he's not always around. This creates some challenges; when there was no one at the front desk to make phone calls, for example, we had difficulty getting a taxi into town for dinner.
While the grounds are beautiful, the pousada is a little removed from civilization. It's about a 10-minute drive into Vale do Capão, or about an hour's walk, so if you don't bring a car with you, you'll be dependent on taxis or moto-taxis to get around.
