slipping in maintenance and service
On a recent trip the 'non smoking' room offered to me smelled very strongly of old cigarette smoke. The room my traveling companion got was a little smoky but not enough to gag him. They switched me to another room which did not stink. The new room was run down. The towels had holes and threads hanging off them. At home I would downgrade these towels to car washing rags. The bath was mildewed, which is not uncommon in China. The handle on the shower door was broken off, although once a repair was attempted with silicone caulking, they gave up and just left it off. The toilet seat in my traveling companion's room was broken. The room heater was not really adequate to keep the room about 64 F, as is often the case in China. The maids apparently could not find my room as it would not be cleaned each day until I after asked at the front desk. The in house restaurant is no longer open for breakfast.
I have become accustomed to China hotels charging a hefty 'deposit' but these guys took it to a whole new level by charging the entire stay (daily rate X number of days) PLUS an additional deposit amount. On check out they could not figure out how to run the credit card so they ran THREE debits and credits before figuring out how to run their own equipment.
Oh, and as an added benefit, every afternoon someone would slip a business card for the local hookers under our doors; a nice high class touch. Since the elevators now require a room card to operate, the cards were being distributed either by a hotel employee or someone to whom the hotel gave an elevator card. This did not give us a good feeling for hotel security procedures.
Years ago this was a clean economy hotel that, although not high class, was safe, clean and comfortable. We like staying in the same hotels; we get to know the restaurants and shops in the area, and usually get to know some of the hotel staff. Our next trip to Ningbo we'll find another hotel.
