Premium Dive Resort in Anilao
I recently stayed at Blue Ribbon Dive Resort in Anilao while completing four TDI courses: Advanced Nitrox, Decompression Procedures, Sidemount, and DPV. My instructors were Jon Venn and Gary Tyson, and the quality of instruction from both was exceptional.
The training was never about checking boxes and issuing certification cards. Jon and Gary made sure I understood not only how to perform a skill, but why I was doing it, what could go wrong, and how to recognize and manage problems. The emphasis was on practical procedures, equipment configuration, redundancy, dive planning, gas management, situational awareness, and habits I can carry into deeper technical diving.
I've taken numerous scuba courses over the years, and this was superior to any previous dive training I've received. I left a more knowledgeable, capable, and safety-conscious diver, with practical tools and procedures I'll use throughout my diving career. There's a significant difference between earning a certification and receiving an education, and this was very much the latter.
Blue Ribbon is also exceptionally well configured for serious divers. The waterfront dive center has dedicated equipment and camera areas, rinse facilities for cameras and electronics, gear-cleaning areas, gas filling capabilities, and analyzers.
Their boat and crew deserve particular recognition. With more than 300 dives and experience with many dive operations, I have a good basis for comparison, and this was one of the better-run operations I've encountered. The boat was in excellent condition, and the crew was consistently attentive and professional. While diving sidemount, they knew exactly when and how to assist with cylinders and equipment during loading, entries, exits, and unloading. They made managing technical equipment substantially easier.
Every dive included a thorough briefing and safety checks, with fresh fruit and beverages during surface intervals. Everything felt organized around safe, efficient, enjoyable diving.
The resort was excellent: directly on the water with a very nice pool and everything a diver needs close at hand. The food was phenomenal, with a diverse menu, full bar, and a kitchen that was very accommodating with modifications and requests.
I also want to address something I noticed in several reviews before booking: the stairs. Those reviews initially gave me some reservations, but having stayed here and experienced other resorts around Anilao, I don't think the complaints provide much context. Anilao is a steep coastal environment, and waterfront resorts commonly involve stairs, steep access roads, or both.
Yes, Blue Ribbon has a substantial staircase, but staff are available to porter luggage and equipment. Once you're at the resort, there's little reason to use it. Your room, restaurant, pool, dive center, waterfront, and boat access are all right there. I dealt with the stairs on arrival and departure, with assistance, and essentially forgot about them for the rest of my stay. That's an entirely reasonable tradeoff for staying directly on the water in Anilao.
Some negative reviews gave me pause before booking, but the instructors' reputation and recommendations about the technical training outweighed those concerns. I'm glad they did. Several criticisms simply didn't match my experience or the realities of an oceanfront dive resort in Anilao.
From Jon and Gary's instruction to the boat crew, dive center, accommodations, food, and staff, Blue Ribbon is a genuinely first-rate operation.
Most importantly, I arrived intending to earn technical diving certifications and left feeling that I'd actually been taught how to become a better technical diver.
I recommend Blue Ribbon without hesitation, particularly to anyone looking for serious TDI training from instructors focused on developing competent, knowledgeable, self-sufficient divers rather than simply issuing certification cards.
I will absolutely dive and train with them again.

This was not a good stay.
The room itself (6) was clean and large but lacked furniture. The safe did not work. The shower was poor.
We did not sleep well due to things dropping on the roof of the room.
The pool itself was small but lovely but there were no seats or loungers by it.
Breakfast was free and was the best meal they cooked. We did not enjoy the rest of the food and went out to eat.
The diving was not the best either with little planning and a guide who missed a lot of the smaller creatures

Fabulous diving - great guides, boat crew and resort staff
We enjoyed a great 2 weeks here, lots of diving with helpful and knowledgeable guides and crew.
Small numbers of divers with each guide often 2 boats going out daily.
Guides were great 'spotters'. Saw octopus, moray and ribbon eels, shrimps, turtles etc AND lots of nudibranch.
Morning afternoon and night dives offered.
Stayed at the resort, large room with big balcony, good menus and plenty of choice. Food never disappointed
Easy and cheap to get to Mabini and Batangas if you wanted to explore.
Looking forward to returning soon.

Amazing dive staff
The divemasters and staff were so welcoming, accommodating, helpful and so kind! I appreciated all their help getting all the equipment ready between dives and on the boat. I hired a private dive guide and was not disappointed! Ramil was amazing, knew where to find everything, and was very patient with me. I could tell he wanted me to get really good photos. On top of that, he knew the currents and area really well, and ended the dive very appropriately when he sensed downcurrent starting, so I felt very safe diving with him. I would 100% recommended Ramil to others and work with him again. I appreciated how comfortable, relaxing, and mosquito-free the common areas are. The pool and areas to wash our dive gear was clean as well. Communication prior to my trip was excellent too. I was contacted well before my trip with the information I needed, and my transports to/from Manila were seamless.
