Luxurious and Practical
A very spacious house, with a very spacious room and en-suite shower room, Salvatrice's home provided us with a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Her welcome was wonderful, with coffee and biscuits on her lovely terrace; her breakfasts just right in size and variety.
We ate dinner our first evening in Hénin-Beaumont, at Hénin-Paris, very pleasant small restaurant. The second evening we braved Aushopping, an industrial estate with chain restaurants – not our normal preference – in Hippopotamus; this was expensive but tasty with very friendly and efficient service.
A visit to Arras on Saturday was a very welcome revelation, a beautiful centre.
I heartily recommend this luxurious bed and breakfast.

A guest house as you have never seen before.
From the outside this guest house seemed to have been build like a miniature castle and the feeling is confirmed while reaching the front door, as the front garden is heavily adorned with stone fountains and various statues. When our lovely host opened the front door, I had the shock of my life! A monumental staircase was devouring by its presence the whole vestibule, supported by Corinthian columns, mouldings, cherubs, the whole lot! A kind of grandiose, breathtaking, a little bit over the top, sort of décor. At a glance, on the sides of the entrance, the dining room on the left was of the same kind. We were shown to our room at the first floor and the room was spotlessly clean the beddings were nice, the wardrobe had loads of space, hangers and shelves in them, the bathroom was very big, the shower oversized... I was not believing it. Ok, someone could qualify the décor as kitch, or super kitch and overdone, but I see in this, a series of meticulously chosen items, an attention to details, for this recent construction, made according to the taste of the Lady who owns it. Looking at the back garden from the bedroom windows, I estimate between 35 to 50 the number of decorating items set in the garden: Transat’s for the guests, sitting area in the shade, granite table, stone barbeque and may be more that you cannot see… That is not my kind of taste, be reassured, BUT that shows the dedication brought to the desire to be welcoming… an absolute fortune was spent to turn the house the way this lady wanted
Only one sole, very little, lonely little detail came to tarnish the perfect picture and it resides in the presence of the humongous main feature of the house; Its monumental staircase and the fully open ground floor: The noise… I am pretty sure that the lovely owner is not even aware about it:
The staircase covers about a third of the whole building on two levels and is made only with sound reflecting hard surfaces: Marble, tiles, granite, and the lack of doors at the ground floor (one can freely pass from the dining room, to the lounge, to the kitchen and back to the main entrance without having to open anything). The total absence of thick curtains, carpets, runners on the stairs, or soft absorbing surfaces between the ground floor rooms and the rest of the building, make that any conversation, phone ring, bedroom door opening or closing, rattle of keys, steps with soft or hard shoes, computer keyboard in a neighbour room, electronic beeps, tap opening or closing, toilet use and flush, clings of table ware and clangs of cutlery, travel from a side of the house to the other at an unexpected volume. The rooms are not sound proofed and an inch gap between the door bottom and the floor tiles does not help. I bring to your imagination an element to include in this equation: a young couple expressing their mutual affection (or a couple of deaf elderly in the same sport) could bring some spices to the conversations at breakfast which was excellent, by the way.
