As good as it gets.

Age-wise, I have seen more summers than I am likely to see. In my time I have stayed in all sorts of accommodation, and I can honestly say this would be towards the very top of any list I could create of ones I would long to return to. Time and again! Gilles, our host, could not have been more welcoming, kind or helpful. The building, which he renovated himself some time ago is stunning and our very large room was like stepping back into a timeless calm oasis of relaxation. Loved it, and the generous breakfasts consisting mostly of home made/grown products. Loved our stay and would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone. It is situated right in the middle of Coutances, with its beautiful cathedral, park and town centre shops/bars/restaurants all on the doorstep. I cannot think of any way in which our stay could have been made better. Thank you!

A genial and gracious host and home.

If I could give this beautiful town house 6 stars I would and for the most genial and gracious of hosts, Gilles. The house is beautifully furnished and very comfortable, my dream town house. This was a ruin 20 years ago and has ben renovated to a very high standard, the antiques and knick-knacks have all been collected and represent the things he loves rather than being 'arty'. Reception is warm. Taken to your room, luggage carried if necessary as there is a steep oak staircase leading to the two rooms. Breakfast is beautifully laid out, very elegant with fresh bread, croissants, brioche, home-made jams, fruit salad, yoghurt and excellent tea. I covet the French butter dish! Wifi is good, shower is excellent. You are but a short walk from the town and the cathedral.
There is a gift to being an excellent host and Gilles has perfected it, an absolute charm of a man who is happy to share his love of his home with you. It smells delightful throughout and there is low sounding classical music, not the slightest bit intrusive. It has lovely courtyard, very well planted.
There is no parking provided by the hotel but it is on a quiet street and parking is available on it or very near by. Knock on his door and Gilles is likely to move his car to accommodate you. This was a wonderful stay and we will return for certain. Perfection!

Inexpressibly wonderful experience

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Tanquerey de la Rochaisiere for 3 nights, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Normandy. We were not prepared for the period furnishing that managed to be both updated yet utterly in keeping with the personality and era of the 17th C building. It was done with tremendous taste and respect for the character of the building. Happily, this was melded with modern comfort. I'm not sure I would have treasured a fully authentic 17th C bathroom, bedding or lighting experience. But t another delight was our host Gilles, who couldn't have been more welcoming, attentive and helpful. His greeting was warm, he was informative about local stuff to do and places to eat, and his breakfasts were outstanding, featuring his own homemade jams, pastries and yogurt (he apologetically informed us he had bought the croissants and bread.) I would return in a heartbeat.
Coutances, though damaged in the war, still has some lovely areas that survived, including the hotel. I have a passion for medieval architecture, thus loved the cathedral. However, next time we will do as Gilles suggested and explore the coast and surrounding area more.
One word about finding the hotel. When we arrived it was raining and affected visibility, and Google maps was a bit hard to follow given the small streets. When I first looked down the street the hotel is on, I was concerned I had written down the wrong address because there was nothing at first glace to distinguish the hotel from among the plain stone facades. As I walked up the street, happily I ran into a knowledgeable person, who fetched Gilles, who immediately greeted us and made the rest easy. Look for a small oval plaque above and to the right of the door.
It was just a great place to stay, with a terrific host. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Stunning

An absolutely stunning as well as welcoming hotel.
Thank you very much for the stay, we wish it could have been longer.
The rooms are huge, as are the breakfasts.
Coutances is a lovely place to visit, and an easy trip from Cherbourg.

A beautiful stay with beautiful people

We spent 5 nights at the Hotel Tanquerey de la Rochaisiere. We booked both rooms for us and our 2 children. This is a wonderful address if you are visiting Coutances and its region. I am a native of the region, and I am astonished by the restoration of this beautiful house of the 17-18th century performed by Gilles and Michel. The house is beautifully decorated, comfortable and peaceful. The hosts are very attentive and pay attention to every detail. You will wake up to an amazing breakfast with freshly baked homemade pastries and gorgeous homemade jams! Thank you Gilles and Michel.
