Hotel Nice Étoile
Four hundred euros. That is the price I had to pay for three nights, a late-season weekend, at this establishment whose name — Nice Étoile — promised a form of sparkle that reality would methodically disprove.
I arrived at three in the morning. The reception was closed, immersed in that administrative darkness typical of places that have given up all hospitality after a certain hour. I had to enter a code, as one does to access a technical room or an underground parking lot. My key card, I had been warned, was waiting for me in the room — whose door had been left ajar, in a negligence that was no longer even trust, simply indifference.
I inspected the bathroom, out of reflex, or perhaps due to that morbid curiosity that always drives us to measure the exact extent of our misfortune. In the sink remained remnants of shaving, those tiny bits of beard that the previous occupant had not deemed necessary to rinse away. In the toilet bowl, pubic hairs were still floating, organic testimonies of a previous presence. The flush had not been pulled, or poorly; the enamel was damp. Someone had used this space before me and had left it without ceremony, bequeathing me the residual intimacy of a stranger.
The shower was installed directly above the toilet — this configuration found in train cabins or used yachts, where every bodily function must be resolved in the same square meter. There was no door to the bathroom. As a hygiene product, except for toilet paper, a single dispenser, a push-push, indicated succinctly: hand wash.
The room, on the other hand, fit within the span of my arms: I could touch both walls simultaneously, palms open, like a man measuring his own cell. The bed, however, was impeccably made — a single bed, too small, whose perfect folds only highlighted its crampedness. There was something almost touching in this contrast: the care given to the unacceptable.
I spent the night shivering. Shivers that I could not entirely attribute to the temperature.
The next morning, the housekeeper arrived. She did not speak French very well, but she made an effort to explain to me, with patient pedagogy, that the hand soap also served for the body and acted as shampoo. A single substance for the entire subject — the face, the torso, the hair, as if the establishment had pushed the logic of rationalization to the limit, reducing the human to a single surface to be lathered.
I sent an email to the front desk to explain the situation. I was offered, as compensation, a breakfast worth eight euros on the house. I declined, specifying that it did not cover the damage — perhaps a bit formal for the circumstance, but I felt it was important to emphasize the disproportion.
In the evening, a dog guarded the entrance. In the hallways and stairs, whose carpet was not impeccably clean, there were stray hairs — human or canine, I did not seek to determine. All of this, of course, was in stark contrast to the photographs that had convinced me.
On the day of my departure, a receptionist welcomed me. Charming, pretty, in a black dress and sandals, she offered me a ten percent discount on my stay. I accepted. It would have been petty to refuse what she offered with such grace — and then, perhaps, I vaguely hoped that this appearance would redeem the rest.
She did not buy it back. I still have chills just thinking about that stay.
