Nice hotel
Stayed in hotel for one night with my family.
Room was clean and pretty nice. Stuff friendly and helpfull.
Hotel located outside of center (30 min if walk, 5-10 min by bus), but in quiet place.

Not good
I don't like giving bad reviews, but this hotel definitely deserves it. I see that someone paid 30 EUR per night... Well, during the Christmas market period, it's 80 and that's way to much for it offers. The hotel is terribly dirty, which is the first thing I noticed when I was walking up the stairs to my room. The room is shabby, worn down, the bathtub was in such a state that I couldn't force myself to get into it. The free wi-fi connection was terrible, useless, basically. The only time it actually worked was between 7 and 8 AM. The only positive things about this hotel are its proximity to the city centre and the train station (about 20-30 minutes on foot, which is great) and the bed which is one of the best I've slept in and I slept like a log. Also it's in a very quiet area which is another plus. The reason I chose this hotel was the fact that it was the only hotel in the proximity of the centre which was under 100 EUR a night and I only needed a place to sleep. But it was definitely overpriced for what it offered and I'm very disappointed, especially since it shouldn't be so hard to vacuum the carpet on the stairs and clean the bathtub properly. I won't be back, even if I have to pay more next time.

Great budget hotel
I stayed here for 4 nights in March 2015. Room 28 (I think the highest numbered room). Everything was pretty basic - definitely no frills. Simple room, tiny writing desk with TV and stool, double/king bed (very comfortable), cupboard to hang clothes, and a chair. The en suite bathroom was OK, but the handheld shower was not very powerful (maybe because I was on the top floor?). All the decor & furniture in the room were very dated and tatty, though generally clean (if you didn't look too closely). Certainly, the bed sheets & pillows were perfectly clean, so for a short stay it was fine. Also, although there seemed to be quite a few other guests (judging by the room lights visible from the outside when it was dark) it was really quiet - maybe even a bit spooky - but good for sleeping.
Breakfast started at 7am. You had to go through the reception area to get to a small room with a simple breakfast choice - cereals, breads/pastries, ham, salami, cheese, boiled eggs, fruit - that was about it. Oh, and coffee & tea. Standard buffet breakfast cost 8 euros, but for only 2.50 euros you could have coffee + croissants (as much as you liked).
As other reviewers have said, it's in a residential area. I walked to the railway station a few times (approx. 20 mins) and definitely didn't feel too comfortable returning in the dark.
Arriving late on the first evening was the only real challenge: Everything was locked except the small front gate (which I later discovered should have been locked also). To enter you need a 4-digit code which you are given by calling a number from a telephone next to the reception door (how you get to this point if the outer gate is locked I don't know!). Anyway, the person at the other end of the phone line also gives you a longer code which you need to tap into the key safe at an arm's reach - this dispenses your room key. Make sure you write down the number of the 4-digit code because you will then need this to get into the building (the room key only works on your room door). None of this was explained to me in advance, so it was an unexpected stress at 11pm.
At this price (30 euros/night) I would recommend this place.

3 km walk from the city centre
Hotel Arc en Ciel is located about 3 km walk from the city centre, in a quiet residential area, which we were ok with, taking into consideration the price, however, if you are ravelling alone, it will probably not feel too comfortable walking back to the hotel alone in the evening. The hotel offers free private parking at the yard, which is locked at night. The reception is opened only during the day, but every guest gets a code for the main entrance to the yard as well as to the building itself. The hotel has 3 floors and there is no elevator, which could be a problem for older guests. Room was ok, furniture looked quite old, but its a 2 star hotel, so overall I rate it 3/5.

The worst
I have stayed in a lot of hotels, from 5 star to no star and this place was a new experience. If I was travelling in SE Asia I would expect this level of hostel, but in Strasbourg I was in for a shock... We booked on venere.com (a mistake) as we were doing a half marathon and for 50 Euros expected something... On arrival the place was deserted except for a few weeds. I run down car was all that was in the car park, with an East European in slippers smoking whilst his bedraggled child was crying. The place was empty and deserted - al locked up, lights off and very run down. We tried the buzzer and tried to communicate with our new East European friend but just got a blank expression. We have paid 50 Euros in advance for this (another mistake). So we left and 10 minutes later found an Ibis in the centre of Strasbourg for 25 Euros more - 5 star luxury compared to the dump we had just been to. It's almost criminal that places such as this can exist - ripping off people through clever search engine optimisation ...
