The lakeside getaway that ticked most of the boxes!
Location
Pong Retreat is located near Pong Lake in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. I found it easily on Google Maps, and the drive itself is scenic, especially as you approach the lake. The area is pretty calm, surrounded by hills and thick greenery – perfect if you’re looking to escape the usual chaos of city life. You get the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, but in a good way. It's about 10 hours from Delhi by road, which makes it a decent weekend trip.
Ambience & Vibe
The property is serene and peaceful, with a laid-back vibe. It's not as commercial as some of the other hill stations, which I liked. There’s something raw about the place, but at the same time, it doesn’t feel like you're roughing it. You have clean, cozy rooms with great views of the lake and the hills. No fancy luxury, but the simplicity is part of the charm. There’s a small pool, a garden area, and a terrace where you can chill and just enjoy the view.
Things to Do
If you love nature, this is the perfect place for hiking and bird-watching. The lake is stunning, and you can do boating or even a bit of fishing if that’s your thing. There’s a local temple nearby which is worth visiting too, for the vibe and to interact with the locals.
There’s also an option to do local village tours, which is a nice way to understand the culture of the area. The people here are really friendly, and it's an interesting contrast from the hustle of Delhi.

Now, coming to the food. Let’s be honest, Himachali food can be a bit hit or miss, but at Pong Retreat, I found it pretty good. Simple, home-cooked meals with a local twist. The lake and hills provide a perfect backdrop for some downtime. It’s not a place for partying or shopping, but for introspection, fresh air, and a slower pace of life. The only thing that could’ve been better was the Wi-Fi speed – but I guess that’s what makes it a true retreat!

If you’re looking to recharge without breaking the bank, this is your spot. Definitely recommend it to anyone who’s tired of the usual “crowded hill station” experience. It’s a breath of fresh air, literally.
