The hotel is modest but very charming and authentic. It feels like being part of the Sienese community—like staying in a private home. The hotel is located just two minutes from the Piazza del Campo, on one of the city’s main streets (Banchi di Sotto). Our room faced the street, which naturally puts you right in the thick of things—including two victory parades by the winning *Contrada* (district), complete with drumming troupes, in the middle of the night. We had expected a standard double room but found ourselves in a room with two double beds and a single bed—a bit unusual... The elevator was unique, too—worth the stay all on its own!
It doesn't get any closer to authentic Italian daily life than this. Everything moves fast—almost hectically—yet without stress; it is lively, and every moment is savored. If you want to be close to the real Italian lifestyle—if that is exactly why you are visiting the Palio, wanting to immerse yourself in the mysteries of this ancient, living tradition and become part of it alongside the locals—then the Piccolo Etruria is the perfect place for you. If, however, you prefer a generic hotel atmosphere—prioritizing standardized amenities over individuality—you might be better off looking elsewhere.
My wife and I were absolutely delighted; for me, the Piccolo Etruria embodies the warmth of the Sienese people, the mystique of the Palio, and the feeling of belonging to something greater—one big, extended family.

Really nice room on the center of Sienne. Easy access to everything. Unfortunately, the air conditioning didn't work for the whole night and it was too hot. Hard to have a good night of sleep :(

Just a terrible hotel and location a long walk from parking. AC doesn’t work and no cups for water, no real towels for showers.

Air conditioning did not work. First, it won’t work if the key fob isn’t in (no electricity without the key in the wall) and it won’t work if a window is opened. So we turned it on and tried to sleep but it was so hot in the room we gave up. So we opened the windows. But people on the streets of Siena are loud. So didn’t get to sleep until 4. At 7, it was so loud again that we couldn’t sleep. So we reported the problem. Was told that opening the windows was a good solution. The air conditioner was clearly not serviced in years and couldn’t get air in due to clogged filters. So two sleepless nights.

Saddest hotel we've ever experienced

Piccolo Hotel Etruria was well located, just steps from the main plaza. We also got a good dinner recommendation from the evening clerk. However, that's its only positive attribute. It was shabby and dreary, noisy and inhospitable. Where shall I begin?
The Room: The rooms were spartan. There wasn't a fridge or a hotpot in the room or even in the public area. The bathroom was tiny and didn't have any glasses. We asked for some and were given a couple of minuscule plastic cups. They didn't provide shampoo or body soap. The towels seemed like dish cloths. Only one of the plugs worked with our adapters, so we went out and bought a new one, but it didn't work either. It kept falling out.
Our Bed: While preparing for bed I noticed a strange bulge poking up where my husband's back would be. Upon further investigation, I found a sewing needle! The next morning when I showed it to the receptionist, the first thing she said was that it wasn't the hotel's fault, it was the laundry service. Never did she apologize or show concern for our well-being. Wow!
Public Spaces: The public area had a couple of mostly empty vending machines with some breakfast bars and coffee. There were a few couches covered in old fabric that looked they came from your old Auntie's home from the seventies. The poor plants hadn't been cared for in ages. The rubber tree was covered in dust, the palm and philodendron were half dead. We hung out in the public area because our "superior" room was so dismal, but the public area was stuffy, so we opened a window only to be barraged with smoke and noise from the bar downstairs.
How can this be considered a two star hotel? Are there no standards or qualifications? I've stayed in far nicer one-star hotels and even hostels with better environments and attitudes. Is there no pride in your establishment? It's called the hospitality industry, but the Piccolo Hotel Etruria was totally inhospitable.
