More than 5 stars!

We only stayed one night here and it is the regret of our trip that we didn’t stay longer!! First, the property itself is gorgeous. We wanted to just stay in the beautiful house for hours relaxing and enjoying the historical feel and the beautiful garden. What really made this place special, however, was the opportunity to be shown around Nakagawa with our host Miyuki, who is local to the region. We made paper and soba noodles during the day, both of which were delightful experiences (especially the paper making!)). We also ate a traditional family meal in the living room of her neighbors. What a privilege! We had several other experiences we wished we had to time to do including visiting Miyuki’s family ceramics studio which has been around for 170 years! Really recommend this if you want a different view into Japan (and ask for Miyuki as your guide!).

A hidden gem in rural Japan

This place is not for everyone. You need to be slightly intrepid, with a deep desire to get off the beaten track and experience a totally genuine side of Japan. This is one of the very few opportunities available for non-Japanese speakers to immerse themselves in rural Japan and get to know some locals without losing an iota of comfort or luxury. Went with my family, including two teens and we all agreed that this was the best part of our Japan trip. Roughly 3 hours from Tokyo but a world away. If you are lucky enough to get a room here, don't hesitate. And be sure to sign up for their experiences/activities - all 10/10.

A luxurious stay in a 200-year-old mansion

This hotel in northeastern Tochigi is a true gem ❤️ It’s the perfect fusion of traditional Japanese architecture and modern design. It’s also the only registered tangible cultural proper in eastern Japan transformed into premium accommodations and definitely the most beautiful hotel I’ve stayed at!
✨ Spacious rooms with garden views
✨ Modern comforts like Simmons beds and full amenities
✨ Local collaborations offering cultural and culinary experiences
While the hotel itself is a haven of relaxation, don’t miss the chance to explore the town of Nakagawa :) There is English-speaking hotel staff that will help you organize experiences nearby, like guided cycling tours and farm-to-table dining

Kid-friendly, authentic Japanese interior

I would like to spend the whole day at this hotel... doing nothing.
It was amazing and the interior still felt super authentic despite the renovations.
Each unit had a different personality. If the guests haven't arrived yet, I would highly recommend asking the hotel staff to see if you can take a sneak peak at the open units.
This hotel is also kid-friendly.
