Cosy guesthouse by the lake
The guesthouse is pretty self contained. They have a restaurant with pretty good food where we can have dinner. Not a lot of restaurants nearby , to get to one would be a long walk in the cold winter night if the short cuts are blocked by snow. I’d say try their restaurant and enjoy the cabin and fireplace atmosphere.
In the winter morning, it’s beautiful to take a walk by the Nojiri lake. You might be able to catch a glimpse of a raccoon print in the snow if lucky!
All in all, Guesthouse Lamp feels like a home away from home.

The Lights were off at Lamp
The Lamp is pretty funky set up but lacked any atmosphere when we were there. They had about 20 guests in house but we could not even get a cup of hot coffee there, the fire place was off and the staff although friendly did not do a lot to create an environment you wanted to stay longer in.
We travelled on to a near by Onsen town and had a much warmer welcome and great time.
Shame as am sure it has potential to be a great place and hope to give it another try in the Summer months.

4 day lake stay
The beds were surprisingly comfortable and private. Each bed had its own lamp, electrical socket and shelf, so you could pull the curtains all the way round your bunk unit. Great wifi but no air con, so the fan was on full and noisy all night. Rather dangerous steep stairwell drop-offs to familiarise yourself (and kids) with upstairs, but I think there is always a hall light on.
The wooden bath downstairs can be used by non guests (for a fee) - which meant some time was spent waiting for a turn at one of only 3 wash stations within. A simple shower facility would have been handy, but it was a particularly busy time. I found a couple of things 'interesting' : we had to rent our towels and on our last night when the place was empty, a lone traveller was put into our room (family of 5) instead of one of the many vacant rooms.
We didn't order the breakfast, but had 2 lovely dinners there. The smoked salmon is delicious! Pizzas and garlic chips were a kid favourite and the grilled chicken was very tasty.
Lamp guest house is directly across the road from the lake and a nice short walk into the township. You can hire a kayak right next door and there seems to be a lot of information available about local sites and hikes (in Japanese only).
