It's a hot spring and Western food is good.
I visited with my wife on the last weekend of August. The location is facing the Hida River and near the center of the hot spring town. The parking lot is about 50 meters away, and it will be in front of the ruins of a former strip theater. Check-in is done by sitting at the desk rather than at the front desk. The staff of Southeast Asian origin are kind enough to explain. The building is six stories high, but the top floor looks like a dormitory, and the general rooms are up to five stories high. We used a Japanese-style bedroom on the fifth floor. Because of the renovation of the old building, I felt uncomfortable about the toilet and washroom position at first, but once I got used to it, I didn't mind anything other than the small size of the toilet. The bath is a Western-style tub
There are many compact private baths, which are available for free for one hour. There is also a cozy inner bath for three or four people, both of which are tororo hot springs that flow from the source, so I personally recommend the inner bath, which you can enter while looking out over the Hida River. Perhaps because of the large number of private baths available, I used the inner bath three times but never met any other guests. Meals will be served in the German restaurant in the morning and evening separate building. I travel from the hotel building through a little maze of passages, but the restaurant itself is large and has terrace seating, so I think spring and fall are pleasant. We had a Western-style meal in the evening, with spare ribs as the main dish, and a set menu in the morning, with bread and eggs. The food prepared by the older German chef was very good, and the German beer served was the best indulgence after the bath. Also, it may be small, but installing room keys for the number of people, towel hangers for hanging bath towels, clean disposable slippers, etc. is a great service because it is always inconvenient. The Onsen Ryokan may not be suitable for those who like it, but personally I felt it was a very good facility, going to the onsen at least five or six times a year. Thank you for your help.

The worst…
An old lady in glasses complained about coming earlier than expected.
At the end of the day, I was told I'd never asked for a box tissue because there were just enough pocket tissues in my room, so I got a few. The next morning I was complaining to another clerk about it. The public bath could not be used. The private bath had no separate dressing room. You have to fill it with hot water yourself.
Not much of a hot spring.
Breakfast was included, but I thought it would be nice to go on time, but I made an appointment on my own and got a call urging me to come in the morning. It was very uncomfortable. Accommodation is not recommended.

All the service staff were polite, friendly and welcoming. The woman owner made the check in process lengthy long, unnecessarily!

Obon Weekend
The Sakura hotel is now very different from the images posted. With the new owners and staff you feel welcomed right from the get go. English or Japanese speakers will find the place very suitable.
The hotel is a short 10/15 min walk to the local station. Train times are interesting so do check. The hotel is now owned by a German/Japanese couple.
The room I booked overlooked the river. And was very suitable for the 5 days I stayed.
Two large twin beds, window lounge area that can be closed off. Simple sink for brushing teeth and basic hygiene and a toilet. No shower, bathroom in the room. For body washes use the onsen baths located on the two lower floors.
The room is clean, sheets, towels and yukata are fresh every day. They also provide a bath pack which contains a towel and toothbrush set. You can get razors and hairbrushes from the reception area.
The onsen was a bath style. Suitable for one person to relax in. The larger room was being repaired due to damage. The onsen bath overlooking the river was comfortable and the temp could be maintained by hot water.
Currently the option is only one bath use a day. Not morning and evening as I would like. However they do have the option to book the onsen for a whole day.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the German restaurant attached to the hotel. The food is freshly cooked, very delicious and I would eat it many times. Totally recommend trying all three spareribs meals and the chops.
Breakfast was cooked. Fried egg, bacon and tomato. Bread, toast, salad, soup nd juice. I enjoyed this a lot. Since I stayed a few days the chef changed the egg option to omelettes but I asked if I could go back to the egg and bacon option as love that more.
The beer is German and I 100% recommend the 3.5 litre beer glass option. I drank more than one surprising many guests there.
If you drive parking is just up the road and free. Do speak with the owners as they can suggest some good places to visit in town too or in the area by train or car.

Along The River with great views
The hotel is across the bridge from the train station along the river. An easy walk and very convenient. Very friendly and helpful staff. Very little English is spoken here but enough to help on get along. Street-level is the 3rd floor for this hotel. Breakfast is served in a dining room on the 4th floor. The onsen furo is down almost river level on the 1st floor. It has one furo with the window and a nice view of the river. Since they alternate the baths, you get to enjoy the view every other day. Furo is from 6 a.m. to midnight. WI-FI in the room worked great. I used Suzunami as a base for enjoying the Takayama Festival since I couldn’t find a room in Takayama. A very short 50-min train ride to/from Takayama.
