Calm and clean

Common area is Japanese old house (100years) in 'Jokamachi(castel town)' of Hikone and the beds locate in a newly build house with view of Japanese garden. Then I enjoyed Japanese old calm feelings and slept well in comfortable and clean room.
To get to this guesthouse, it is not easy. You are better to bring a enlarged printed map from Google or a printed guide with pictures from the website of this guesthouse.

Amazing budget guesthouse!

The couple who own the place were so friendly and welcoming! My husband and I stayed one night and really enjoyed the traditional house. Had to sleep in separate rooms but that is a small inconvenience for the great price of our stay!
The owner picked us up at Hikone station for a small, 200 yen fee. He emailed us after the booking and offered to pick us up so we didn't have to walk in the rain. We do not speak Japanese so we were very relieved to find out he spoke good English.
Overall, we had a great experience!

Homely budget guest house

Guesthouse Muga is run by Hajime-san and his wife Noriko-san. They are very friendly, helpful and very welcoming.
Hikone is a small town, and the guesthouse is located in the residential area, so there's not much around after dark, and the streets are not very well lit. There is no obvious signage at the main entrance, so just look out for the brightly lit building.
The owners stay in the traditional main building, where the common area and kitchen are located. Guests walk through a little Japanese garden to reach the new annex building where the rooms are. Facilities are simple, but adequate.
Walking from the train station will take approximately 15~20mins. Hikone Castle is about 15mins walk away as well, although a bicycle might serve you well to take you around town (¥500 10hrs rental from near the station), including to Lake Biwa.
It was unfortunate that I only stayed for 1 night, but I will most likely stay here again when I return to Hikone in the future.

Cyclist Friendly

Stayed one night , the couple who own Muga were fantastic. It is an old traditional house and yard with a new annex for visitors to sleep, laundry and clean up. The kitchen is available for you to prepare your meals and not far away is an excellent supermarket. The owners are young and enthusiastic and it shows in their guesthouse.

Best Guest House for the budget traveler!

Hikone is a nice little town with lots of charm...the area around Hikone Castle is free of high rise mansions and other modern ugly stuff so it maintains the old Japanese town feel...and a lot of the shops there have been in business for over a 100 years! It isn't nearly as crowded as Kyoto and while it is a smaller town there are many cafés, shops, and restaurants along the main roads.
Guest House Muga is also a traditional pre-war style Japanese house that's been refurbished. Well, the sleeping quarters are in a separate building on the property and they're brand new. The common area and kitchen are in the main house...look around the common area and you will see lots of antiques that were found and kept during the renovation. The garden is also a very nice area, very zen like atmosphere! If you want to experience the real traditional feel of a pre-war Japanese house on a budget, I highly recommend you stay here. The owner couple are very good people, grocery store nearby, and sento (public bath) is another experience I urge you to try if you want the locals only tour!
