Wonderful stay! Exceptional hospitality and yummy meals!

A delightful stay in a comfortable authentic Japanese pension! Exceptional hosts with a warm welcome and attention to guests comfort was truly a highlight. Especially the delicious shabu hot pot dinner which my son declared the best both he has ever tasted and brimming with local fresh vegetables and generous helpings of high quality beef. My son, a vegetarian, was offered tofu without being asked and because he was a surprise addition to our booking, they made up a room for him on the spot. Stay here for a personal experience with hosts that truly care and are proud of their 40 plus years of hospitality.

Delightfully friendly and kind hosts.
Very clean place. Simple rooms, with everything you need, and shared washrooms. Nice breakfast. The shuttle to the lift is nice (although also easily walkeable in 10-15 minutes). The onsen bath downstairs is a definite bonus.

Cozy and friendly pension

I stayed at Elm pension for 2 night in Jan/Feb 2015. The owners, Toshi & Niiyama are very friendly, hospitable and wonderful hosts. Rooms are comfortable, nice beds and bedding (and good pillows too!). I had a room with a small bathroom which had a toilet, basin and bath/shower. Not all rooms have their own bathroom, with shared bathroom facilities available. I had a hotpot dinner one night which was amazing. All ingredients - meat, vegetables, fish & rice were provided along with instruction on how to cook using the pot on my table. Niiyama also prepared an apple for my dessert and offered me tea.
Breakfast was also incredible - eggs, ham, salad, toast, fruit with yoghurt and tea/coffee. Niiyama also bought me out some Vegemite which was a nice thoughtful touch (and much appreciated by me).
This is not a 5 star property, but it is very cozy and comfortable and excellent value for money. Toshi will also drive you up to Madarao ski area (literally 1 minute drive) in the morning and pick you up in the afternoon. He also dropped me at the bus stop on my departure.
Will definitely return!!

Very comfortable with great host and hostess.

Pension Elm is very comfortable and Toshi and Yoshiko are great hosts. Rooms are very simple, some with en suite and others with shared facilities. I had simple twin bed room with lovely views. Breakfast is simple but fresh and appetising. I had dinner in house twice and both were excellent meals. The second was a Nabe that I shared with my hosts and some of there friends which was great fun. Toshi speaks very good English as he spent many years working for Shell in different parts of the world. Toshi also supplied me with lift passes which are the cheapest day tickets I've had anywhere in the world!
