Amazing views and great location

This hotel was booked for us by Y.E.S. Yakushima tours and it was a great choice that we really enjoyed. If you've stayed at a non-chain hotel that has been around a while you know not to expect the Ritz. It's a little worn down, but it's clean and safe and the staff are great. Our room was a traditional Japanese-style with lots of room and the most beautiful view of the mountains and the Anbo river! There are public baths separated by gender you can soak in which was nice. We didn't have dinner there (which we probably should have since the restaurant selection within walking distance is minimal) but had breakfast every morning and it was always tasty and filling.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
Large Tatami room with separate large genkan, own bathroom, and separate sitting area, own balcony overlooking the river. Very lovely.
Private and peaceful setting.
Walking distance to quite a few restaurants and bars
One of their staff speaks perfect fluent English
Fridge and safe in room
Rooms have an insane number of wardrobes for storage
They pack breakfast and lunch bentos for hikers
Cons:
The restaurant was out of service because they lost their chef
Hot water was on the fritz our entire stay. During each shower it would turn hot, then cold, then hot, then cold at least three times.
I got bitten by something all over staying here, lots of little itchy bites. Not sure what it was.
The hotel is dated (no automated toilet, vinyl floors in halls), but was comfy nonetheless.
Overall it was a good hotel and if it were not for the insect bites I would stay again. I even wore insect repellent to sleep but still awoke with new bites.

Old hotel but truly majical

The staff here are AMAZING ! They will do anything to make your stay a wonderful experience Christina helped us so much and made our stay very special thank you for everything also thank you to the wonderful chef who provided an amazing Japanese breakfast every day what an experience !,

Great Inn

Nice clean Inn with great views and delicious food. The rooms are nice tatami with great views. The meals are wonderful and delicious with lots of variety. They also have hot baths. One has a view the other does not. They alternate between men and women for different days.

Dated hotel but very good food

I stayed here with my son for two nights. The hotel is very dated, think 50's or 60's. There's no way to sugar coat that reality. But having said that, our room was very large, had a good view and there was a separate tatami room where my son was able to have his own space and rolled out a futon at night to sleep . The room was clean and the best surprise of all was a wooden soaking tub. In true Japanese tradition there was a bench and wooden bucket so you could wash off first before getting into the tub. I spent about 30 minutes in the bathroom between the tub the hand held shower and the stool and bucket. There is also a communal tub which we saw but did not use. The highlight, aside from the tubs, would have to be the food. For dinner we had about eight courses of beautifully prepared food. On the second night I wasn't feeling well so the chef very graciously provided me with an exceptional vegetarian meal. The hotel is quite close to the little town of Ambo. If you are looking for a modern hotel this would not be the place for you. But if you want something very authentic, you would like this place . The staff spoke minimal English but spoke enough to understand we needed to get to the airport for our trip back to Osaka . Rather than call a cab, the owner drove us there himself.
