Lovely grounds, but no hot water/Wi-Fi in the room, and manager not able to deal with the situation

I stayed one night and really wanted to love The Lawford, the grounds are beautiful and front-desk staff were polite. I know check-in is 2:00 pm; I arrived around 12:30 pm. The hotel was completely empty and we were told early check-in wasn’t possible.
The main issue: the room had no hot water and no Wi-Fi. I reported it immediately. Maintenance came in and out all afternoon but couldn’t fix it. An alternative room was only offered around 9:00 pm, our only night in Malindi, by which time we were heading to dinner. In a hotel positioned as luxury, I expected a prompt fix or an earlier move.
At $200 for a “luxury” room, the value felt poor when basic guesthouses at a fraction of the price have hot water and Wi-Fi. Communication didn’t help: I was given the on-site manager’s contact and was promised a follow-up call that never came. Most disappointing, there was no goodwill gesture (partial refund, credit, or meal) despite the disruption. Not even a bottle of water offered, which they made me pay extra at the breakfast. I would definitely not go back there.
Positives: lovely garden and courteous front desk staff.

Deeply Disappointed – Not the Lawford I Once Knew

Having stayed at Lawford Malindi before, this visit was a huge letdown. The experience felt neglected across the board — from an uncooperative owner to subdued staff who seemed unsure or unable to help.
The issues started right from check-in:
• The TV wasn’t working
• It took 4 hours to fix the WiFi
• My balcony sliding doors couldn’t lock — a major security concern
• There was no way to contact reception or security
• Pathways around the property were poorly lit at night
And then the bed and pillows? A double sigh — uncomfortable and far from restful. I barely slept and chose to leave the next morning.
The sliding door issue was especially alarming. Despite raising it, neither the owner nor the management made any effort to address it. That alone made the stay feel unsafe and not worth the risk.
Unfortunately, I can’t recommend Lawford in its current state. A once-charming spot now feels neglected and mismanaged.

Really great choice

Very nice and nice hotel, friendly staff, I ate in the restaurant of really good cheese samosas, and Provençal squid accompanied with very good rice, I highly recommend it, we will see you very soon but this time with friends

Lawford, a unique experience

Arriving at Lawford is already a unique experience in itself.... The typical roof of the place, which overlooks the reception which leads to the lush garden, is a work of art. The villas and rooms are located in the green so you never feel like a crowded hotel. The restaurant cuisine, with an Italian twist, really deserves it. The two large pools in the green are very pleasant (and always clean).
I stayed in a villa: private pool and stylish Kenyan style furniture for a super holiday!
