An Exquisite Stay in Georgetown
Our family of four were fairly fortunate to be offered Loft room 6 of 56 Muntri Mews which is part of Georgetown Heritage and Hotels. The location is perfect as it is right in the middle of Georgetown, within walking distance to all main attractions in the Armenian Street and clan houses. It is located in Lebuh Muntri which runs parallel to Chulia street, that can be accessed via a small side lane or further down towards Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling via Love Lane. The facade is characteristic of peranakan pre war terrace houses-traditional wooden shutters on the facade of the top level, butterfly shaped air vents on either side of the lower level while a pair of wooden doors with golden flower motifs form the classic features of the peranakan house.
We had a “wow” moment as we entered the building. A beautiful wooden screen serves as a background while a classic English dressing table sits in the middle of the screen. The classic wooden screen is flanked by two walkways on either side; A beautiful round table sits right at the centre of the room while antique Chinese chairs and tables line up against the wall on either side, inviting guests to sit down and rest.
The middle section is equally charming! An air well serves to cool down the house while allowing natural light to come through in daytime. A wooden dining suite fits well in a spacious family/dining room, flanked by mirrors and special arts work on either wall. The house suddenly appears much more spacious than one would expect standing outside the house!
Our room sits above the dining room through a charming wooden staircase. Our room is like a house in a house! It has a split level great for the teenage child/children’s own space upstairs. Both levels are well furnished with sofa and beds and its own ensuite toilet and shower rooms!
Lower level is fully furnished with sofa set and dining table and chairs. A middle screen separates the lounge space from the bedrooms. There are two double beds on this level, while the upper level also has a double bed. Essentially, this guest room can easily accommodate a family of six or seven! Two double beds were cleverly compartmentalized with nice cabinetry. Both levels have efficient and silent air conditioners making this guest room a very comfortable oasis in the middle of the hot and humid Georgetown.
Although the mattress is a bit firmer and doona is a bit on the thin side, overall our sleep was generally good! The outside noise is well walled off due to its central location in the house and well insulated window glasses. The toilets on both levels are clean and well equipped with ample towels.
Despite other guest rooms being in the front part and backyard court of this house, we didn’t hear any noise from them, attesting to the cleverness of the architect in creating these well isolated individual guest rooms within the same house.
Staff at Muntri Mews are extremely friendly and helpful. I misplaced my handphone in the courtyard - staff found it and passed it on to the reception for me to pick it up later. I am very grateful to the staff.
Parking can be challenging if you come by a car. Muntri Mews unfortunately has not got its own parking space. It depends on your luck if you can find a car park in front of the hotel. Also, there is no lift at 56 Lebuh Muntri. Hence, it is not so ideal for guests with mobility issues.
Casting that aside, we were absolutely impressed with our exquisite stay at Muntri Mews. We would definitely like to come back and stay again at Muntri Mews in the future! Thank you!

What a gem! Staying at the Muntri Mews was like lodging in a 19th century cultural museum. The hotel is part of the George Town Heritage & Hotels group, and it was the second one of the group I have stayed in. The previous experience was good, but this one was outstanding. The room was actually a two-level suite, and perhaps a bit much for a solo traveler, with three king-size beds available, but the affable manager Linda gave me a small gift that she admitted was a bribe to make sure my wife made the trip should I return for the same event next year. Super nice! Because my flight arrived extremely late, I arrived at the Muntri Mews after midnight, but check-in was no problem. (I did use Hotels.com's messaging to make sure the hotel knew I was likely to be very late, but that doesn't always mean such a warm welcome would occur after midnight.) I did make a video to make sure my wife did see my accommodations, but the quality is too poor to post. I'll just say if I'm back in Penang I will definitely try to book the Muntri Mews again, though they only have a small number of rooms, so I would need to book early! The location in the historic UNESCO World Heritage area is also ideal, and there are excellent dining options with a range of restaurants and a lot of Penang's word-famous street food in the area.

Unique experience
Unique experience. Upon arrival it leaves you a bit surprised because it is not the classic hotel. Afterwards you appreciate it. A sort of renovated 'colonial' house. Convenient location in the center

Excellent location
Location is very central. Room was huge, comfy bed and great bathroom.
Very clean and tidy. The staff are extremely helpful and attentive.
The only thing missing is a pool, but that’s ok.

excellent experience in the heart of Georgetown
Fully conform to our expectations. Excellent service, excellent location. Might seerm a little noisy at night, but still rate as excellent.
