Authentic local island experience with outstanding host
Dhonfanu is a local island, not a resort island, and that is exactly its charm. You can walk around the island in about 20 minutes (approx. 1.8 km). Fehi velaa Stay is currently the only guesthouse on the island, with just five rooms — two downstairs near the dining area and three upstairs with a small sun terrace. There is a nice sea view, although unfortunately the short area between the guesthouse and the ocean has some visible construction waste.
The “tourist beach” is about a 500-meter walk away from the guesthouse. It’s great for relaxing, but it is not possible to do snorkeling from the ‘tourist beach’ it is more for just for a dip in the water – There is however another spot from where you can easily go snorkeling directly from the beach but you will have to wear appropriate clothing e.g. shorts and t-shirt.
In the evenings, you can often see nurse sharks and rays near the jetty, attracted by the lights and fish scraps from local fishermen. The island also has a beautiful sunset beach.
The guesthouse has a small dive center and mainly attracts divers, but snorkelers as we are , are very welcome too.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with a large bedroom and bathroom. Some details could be improved: lighting is quite dim, some lamps cannot be used due to incompatible plugs, and a few fittings (shower head, toilet seat) are loose. However, this is a guesthouse rather than a hotel, and these issues did not significantly affect our stay.
Meals are simple and fairly repetitive, which is understandable given the remote location and small scale of the guesthouse. After sharing our feedback, the staff made an effort to vary the dishes, which we appreciated.
Cleaning and towel changes are on request, so remember to ask if you want service.
The absolute highlight is the owner’s dedication, service and passion for marine life. He seems tireless, starting early each morning looking for Matas with his drone and often going out with the boat in the evenings searching for whale sharks.
Overall, a genuine island experience with amazing personal service, best suited for travelers who value authenticity and marine life over luxury.
Note, the guest house is offering several daily opportunities to join on the diving boat. You can join as both diver and just for snorkeling. We were visiting during manta season and had the opportunity to snorkel with hundreds of mantas which was an extraordinary experience for us. Since we felt very safe, we also decided to do a trail dive where we again got to see several mantas. The water is just amazing in this area
