Close to the Cathedral

Arrived with a tour, so I did not choose this hotel. That being said,, My room #207 had an excellent view of the cathedral, especially at night. Clean sheets, fluffy pillow and a very cramped bathroom. I didn't go for their amenities. Breakfast was just that, a break of a fast. Cereal, cookies, coffee, toast and jam. There are countless restaurants nearby, but if you're on the cheap, why not. Sorry no pictures of my hotel view.
A great place to lay your head and get some rest from exploring Morelia. Plenty to see and do. Follow me.

Dark, damp, dreary

My windowless room was dark, very damp, and stinky. Lots of street noise (a karaoke bar across the street). The room didn't have so much as a hook or hanger for clothes. Reception staff were totally incompetent -- it took them 20 minutes to find my reservation and do a simple check-in, they are incapable of giving directions to a place a few block away and have no maps. The continental "breakfast" is Wonder bread with little jam packets, and fake juice. The best thing is the location near the center, but there are better options in this price range near the center.

Another Hole Among Holes In The Wall Hotels

stinky bathroom, listen to everyone's morning toilet
and the 4 am chatter of their untrained staff (well, at least one guy was doing a good job)
bed was okay and wifi good, parking free and good location
for walking around Morelia center, modest bakery and taco joint around the corner

Hard to find; worth the effort

My daughters and I recently traveled to Morelia and stayed at the Hotel Colonial. Overall it was a good experience. Some things would have been beneficial to know ahead of time. For example, the hotel is located on Calle 20 November. However, coming from the Cathedral the street is named Satiago Tapia. You get to Morelos and it becomes 20 November. The Hotel is located at that intersection.
The hotel is a relatively small (26 room) hotel built around two courtyards. The rooms are small, but comfortable. The staff is extremely courteous and helpful and have good English skills. We arrived earlier than check in time but the staff let my daughters check into their room immediately and me check into mine as soon as it was clean. They were extremely accommodating.
The only issue with the rooms was both had a slight (about 1 ½ inch) step up into the bathroom. Just enough to destroy a toe in the middle of the night.
The hotel does not look like much from the outside, but is open and larger than it appears once inside. It I located within blocks of the historical center of the city and Plaza de Armas. Wi-Fi was available throughout the hotel and parking was available less than a block away. The free “continental breakfast” was actually coffee, cereal and some packaged cookies. Not certain what continent that is breakfast, but hey, it was free. I would recommend the place to anyone coming to Morelia.

Five Star Service

I'm just finishing a 3 week stay at Hotel Colonial. While there are a few drawbacks w/ a centuries old building; i.e. noise from both inside and outside, the hotel is charming. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room far away from the main intersection.
Now for the pluses......the manager/concierge/etc. is fantastic! I have traveled the world and Alejandro could work in any 5 star hotel/resort. He and his staff are the most accommodating I've ever seen! The rooms are clean, the maids are meticulous and will meet your every need.
The location is only two blocks from the main square w/ restaurants, shops, hotels, etc. The center of activity in Morelia.
