3 nights stay
Stayed here for 3 nights July 2025 with my partner. He’d surprised me for my birthday back in March with a trip to Berlin and liked the look of this hotel. Check-in was easy and we received a nice welcome. Up in the room we had everything we needed, a nice clean room all smart and clean lines, blackout curtains and comfortable bed plus welcome lollipops which was a nice touch! The shower and sink is within the room with shower being separated by glass which was fine by us and a toilet separated by a sliding door. It was particularly hot weather in Berlin and the rest of the hotel was a little too warm till eventually windows were opened that helped improve things however the room was fine as the air-con was good. What was also good in the room was a couple of hooks on the wall to hang jackets etc I often think the majority of hotels are missing this however an extra hook at the shower area would be good for towels as the one wasn’t enough. The hotel was quiet of a night allowing for a good nights sleep which we got. We spent a bit of time in spa area upstairs using the hot tub in a sheltered outside area just unfortunate it couldn’t be switched on for the bubbles as it appeared to be broken with no sign of it being fixed whilst we were there. We used steam room and sauna which were a nice touch. The hotel also has a restaurant which we didn’t use. We weren’t sure if this also contained a bar area that could be used we did decide to go take a look one evening however there appeared to be a private event on. We felt the hotels location was a good spot, plenty of restaurants & bars near by including gay bars and close to a metro station. All in all a really good hotel with friendly staff. We loved staying here for our first stay in Berlin. I wouldn’t mind staying at again if me and my partner were to return to Berlin!

Fantastic location, good value for the location, wheelchair accessible (ish)! Why the bad reviews?
First of all, this hotel is a NEAR PERFECT location - right between the end of Tauentzienstraße and the edge of Berlin's gay village. Walk one block north, U-Bahnhof (underground station) Wittenbergplatz is in front of you (which is on line U2, which is one stop from Zoologischer Garten, where the S-Bahn trains from the airport go), and Berlin's biggest department store, KaDeWe, is to your left. Walk one block south, one of Berlin's most popular gay bars (Prinzknecht) is on your right. If visiting anything else in Berlin, there's a nice little café/bakery where you can grab your lunch to go and then go get the U-Bahn...
The hotel is linked to a nice Georgian restaurant ([Madloba] unusual - to me, that's a plus point). Pretty deserted, but can't see why - the food's delicious, reasonably priced, and the service is good. In the same room, in the mornings, the hotel has breakfast. Breakfast is OK, though the spread is rather limited, but more than enough for a decent breakfast. They also offer à la carte cooked items (though I didn't partake, so can't comment on how good they are, if they're cost extra, or what).
The hotel seemed clean and everywhere was well-kept. The rooms are accessible, to a point. There's grab rails by the toilet and a wheel-under sink. That makes it good enough for a short break, as far as I'm concerned. There is TECHNICALLY a roll-in shower, but no grab-rails by the shower, no fixed seat (there's a moveable shower stool, which, someone partially-ambulant or someone travelling with an able-bodied companion might be able to make use of), nor any shower curtain to put around a wheelchair to shield it from getting wet whilst you showered (though, again, if you're travelling with an able-bodied companion, not an issue, as they could take it out the bathroom for you). To make it an ideal accessible wet-room would be an expensive investment for the hotel, and would require an ENTIRE rebuilding and re-plumbing of the room (swapping the toilet and the shower around so they could fix a fold-down seat by the shower and have a fixed grab rail by it to enable an easy transfer). However, like I said, for a break of a few days, the shower is not really an issue...
Housekeeping was also good - your room was always immaculate when you got back after being out.
So, weighing up the great location, good restaurant, decent breakfast, excellent cleanliness, OK wheelchair adaptions, with the reasonable price, I would say the Axel Hotel in Berlin is a great option.

I have been coming yearly for 6-7 years and the standard has been decreasing every time
The room is full of dust on all the black surfaces. The door to the toilet is broken and cannot open be open with pushing hard.
The breakfast is way below standard. This was me final visit to Axel Berlin.

Lost its Glamour
No way in the world can this hotel, which has its Special uniqueness for gay men, CAN KEEP A GRADE OF 4 STARS. The place is archaic, rooms are run down and NOT suitable for a stay. No closets, nothing in the room set-up is for a stay, Unless one's only purpose is the mingeling and interact with other guests ... ie: a Drop Down soap and condoms are amoung the amenities. Some of the hotel facilities are under renuvation for ages - Not reasonable! They offer a special deal for breakfast for 14.5 euros and they even dare to call it a queens' feast. It is embarrassingly poor and doesn't worth it. Primitive Elevator! All to all this place is a sleep over Boardel. I stayed there a few time over the years... It is not what it had used to be. Far from it... Great location is

Good location. Good design, but looked better in the past. Is getting a bit worn. The spa was closed when I was there.
