What a view

It is located super nice, almost on top, we jumped over photo exhibition, instead to spend time outside and enjoy the view in all directions, at the same time we also just got a portion of ice cream down and a cup of hot chocolate, it is not much more expensive up there than so many of the other tourist places, but remember cash.

Not great, less impressive than expected

Pretty pricey. You take a bus from 6km away to the kehlsteinhaus. The property ia less impressive than I imagined. Little to see and little historical context. A nice tour environment but also very touristy. All in all not a great experience, but can be checked off the list.

Don’t go - IT IS CLOSED FOR RECONSTRUCTION

Don’t go folks. You can’t come close since they are doing maintenance on the house. The bus is not driving. The road is closed. You can walk, but only to the elevator. Oh yes: the small documentation center only allows a few people in. The wait8ng lines are looooooooooong.

A High BIrthday Present for der Fuhrer!

Bormann had this built for Hitler for his 50th Birthday but he apparently only visited it about 13 times as he was actually frightened of heights. You can now get a bus from Obersalzburg to the entrance and use the same lift as Hitler used to be lifted to the absolutely fabulous view at the top. You can wander around the whole place, noting that it was never used for overnight stays, but has a wonderful dining room and hallway with picture windows. Lunch is available as are ice creams and other foods and you can walk up the hill to get pictures with the haus in
the foreground and the Bavarian Alps all around it. It is well worth it for the cost, the history and the views.

Haus Kehlstein vs Kehlsteinhaus

First of all, I have to clarify one important thing: The "Haus Kehlstein" is NOT the Kehlsteinhaus. The former is a small Bed & Breakfast hotel close to the Wimbachklamm. The latter is the famous Eagle's nest with some panorama views. Please do not confuse these two houses! Seemingly, some guys who posted over here did not get it right. The "Haus Kehlstein" is definitively a place where you want to stay over night. The owners are very, very friendly German people. Opposite of the Haus there is a typical Bavarian restaurant and a short walk up the hill you can find the Wimbachklamm, a river cutting its way through the mountain. Moreover, here is a perfect start for some wonderful hiking tours to the Watzmann, the Königsee or to the Hintersee. To sum up, I can highly recommend the Haus Kehlstein for people who rather prefer staying in a typical, small Bavarian hotel than in a large mainstream hotel downtown Schönau.
