The special hotel in the spa town of Rathen
We particularly liked the hotel's concept regarding digitalization and sustainability. We usually only ever had breakfast included with hotel bookings. This time, half-board was automatically included with the booking, and we were thrilled with it. The breakfast buffet had many regional and homemade products for every taste. The very wide selection for the 2-course dinner was also excellent in terms of taste. The service staff was very friendly and attentive. The hotel room was very clean. The hotel is highly recommended!

Gladly again to Rathen, but only as a day guest and also very gladly again by ferry..
We got in house 3 the apartment 2 as an alternative, as we refused a stay at the Hotel Zeitgeist. Thank you for this alternative. We only review the apartment 2, as well as the food and service at the Hotel Rathener Hof. Thanks for the really nice apartment, where we can imagine well, if there is a large group arriving, that is really cool. We got lost together all the time. After our move, the back and forth, we were understandably really tired of it that evening. Actually, the afternoon was meant for wellness, unfortunately nothing came of it, it was then dark during the move, so off for dinner. That evening was very sobering little, as were the guests. There weren't many, but you could see and hear it, very dissatisfied. The location of the buffet is peculiar, but you'll have thought of something, whatever. In a four-star house, we just expected a different meal, but that night it didn't matter. Just a well-intentioned tip. If there is a leftover cake from the afternoon with price tag in the display case, the guests were unhappy with the food anyway and still hungry and ask if you could have a piece of the cake with you as part of the HP, then it is sad to reject that, you don't forgive yourself anything, do you? It has to be disposed anyway and the 3 guests were then even more dissatisfied, which did not have to be. One thing is very important to us because we have read and heard so much about Czech staff. We were very curious after our move how we would be "received" by the staff in the restaurant. First of all, it's totally messy where the staff comes from!! You don't make any difference with the guests. We have been politely welcomed at all meals, friendly and courteous service. Thanks for that!!! Also the staff of the kitchen is very friendly and helpful to guests. On the second night the food was better, even more guests in the restaurant. Overall, the food in quality and quantity, the location and structure of the buffet are not 4 stars. Breakfast was available, there is one for us that we have really never experienced before. Before breakfast time ended, the coffee machine was driven away from the location. Real people, at 4 stars??? This isn't a hostel where we're all making fun of ourselves. A young couple with a toddler was able to get something to eat, only the coffee machine was gone. We are traveling a lot in and around Dresden and that even in 4 and 5 star houses the breakfast buffet is tucked away is normal, but before that we really didn't "hide" the machine. We want to be good hosts for everyone, right?? On the second day we had planned wellness until noon, as the first day was gone and in the afternoon we had an appointment. Unfortunately, that was also cancelled, wellness unfortunately only from 2 pm. You don't have direct access from house 3, you have to go through the hotel, but it was just for us such a longed-for wellness holiday without wellness. Conclusion: Our points gets the house for the location, the super nice apartment, which we can really highly recommend for a family or group. And we also rate the Czech staff positively, which really gets a lot from dissatisfied guests. Maybe not everyone speaks perfect German, but there are always 2 of them and everything can be clarified, we have observed a lot and if the hotel did not have these diligent staff in the kitchen and service........ The Czech staff definitely had more decency, style and friendliness, like the German staff in the zeitgeist, also there the Czech staff was really trying. 4 star houses are neither, whoever rates it that way. We were actually planning to extend the stay if we liked it, also possibly over the turn of the year. We are glad not to have asked and extended and have gladly gone home again.

Okay, but not a strong recommendation
Located very well, it is quiet and ideal for exploring the Bastei, hiking, and enjoying. The sauna and pool are okay, but we were always the only ones there.
Unfortunately, the house does not correspond to a 4-star hotel. No personal service, tasteless room with mismatched furniture, no toiletries in the bathroom, and everything feels a bit loveless. The food is okay, but you can also tell here that the love for detail - and good seasoning - is missing.

Location, room, environment nice, food poor. 2 stars, never 4!!
Room tidy, bathroom too! Location very nice. Good starting point for hikes.
The Czech staff is hardworking and with that it stops, which can be rated good. No reception, welcome drink in a vessel at the drafty entrance for self-service. Dinner bad, we had veal ball (this is actually a tender meat) , was tough and hard and unseasoned. The next evening we had another veal goulash because no one had eaten it. No dessert, No cake ...., there were also some children in the hotel, because there were still school holidays in Saxony, they would have been happy about something sweet. That's just part of it in a 4 star house!! Saved at every corner and edge. No bar or similar in the house, after dinner you could not end the evening comfortably with a glass of wine.

Often more appearances than being
First, the criteria of a 4-star hotel:
Service & reception:
Reception staffed 16 to 18 hours, accessible 24 hours --> there is no reception here at all. You clarify everything with the poor to not at all German speaking restaurant staff
Luggage service and in-room laundry/beverage services (e.g. B.Minibar) ---> Not available.
Cashless payment possible--> Card payment is the only option.
Room facilities:
High-quality, cozy and harmonious furnishings as well as larger rooms (cf. 3 stars)--> True here.
Seating area with armchair or couch and side table/desk--> Right here.
Bathrobe (on request or standard)--> True here.
Bathroom:
Hair dryer (hair dryer) and cosmetic mirror--> The cosmetic mirror is defective, there is a hairdryer.
Generous storage areas--> Generous storage areas in the bathroom are misrepresentations.
Extended cosmetics (e.g. shower cap, nail file, cotton swabs)--> There are no products here.
Gastronomy:
Breakfast buffet or breakfast menu--> True. More on this below.
In general:
Elevator/Lift--> True.
Seating in the lobby--> There is no lobby and therefore no seating.
About our stay:
The hotel is well embedded in Saxon Switzerland with the Elbe right outside the door. So the setting fits. Also, the rooms are large and attractively designed, the beds are comfortable and there is a wellness bag in the room with sauna towels and bathrobes in the closet.
Unfortunately, some is more appearance than being.
And often it is precisely THESE small points that make a rating with a 2 instead of a 5 skip. Saving in the wrong place, unfortunately also leads to the wrong result.
The fact that there is no automated daily housekeeping is completely ok. However, the concept suffers here. Otherwise, housekeeping would certainly have noticed that the cosmetic mirror was defective.
The sink is visually beautiful, unfortunately it is not practical at all.
The heeler is a joke for this big room. This size is at home my PC monitor. In the bathroom there are two listless plastic soap dispensers (3 in 1 for hands, body and hair). I find it difficult, because there is a reason why shower gel and shampoo can be bought separately. In addition, there is a holding device for the dispensers on the walls at the sink and in the shower. These are empty and it looks unattractive. I'm afraid it's being saved in the wrong place. Unfortunately, for two, you only get one room card, which means that one always has to rely on the other.
The sauna area: very nicely decorated, visually very appealing. And with 3 saunas also well equipped. Unfortunately, there are only armchairs to sit on. Lying here is a misrepresentation. And especially after a sauna session you want to make yourself comfortable. Here the coziness factor is absolutely missing.
For restaurant/breakfast and dinner:
The restaurant is visually very appealing.
Breakfast (and that just upset me mightily!) is ok. That's all. It doesn’t help if the rolls are decoratively draped, but are inferior in quality and taste. Since the knives at the table are not the sharpest either, it becomes difficult to cut open the rolls at all. Here a bread knife at the buffet should not mean an economic decline.
When I asked for fried eggs, I received the comment: "Today we have omelette. There will be fried eggs tomorrow." What?????? No fresh fried eggs for breakfast in a 4-star hotel? Where do you get such a thing????
In addition, the omelets are already all ready-fried at the buffet. And are kept warm under a plastic hood. Presumably these (like the pancakes, sausages & co.) were prepared hours ago. None of it is freshly prepared.
But how about saving on staff?
For dinner: The choice at the buffet is ok. Unfortunately, the fish was much too dry, the dumplings and croquettes as well as the meat only lukewarm or hard due to the keeping warm. I'd like my food hot.
Conclusion: Saving in the wrong place is clearly the wrong way, especially in this day and age, when everyone is upgrading to delight guests. The hotel has at most 3-star format.
