Nice hotel, friendly staff, great food (especially for allergy sufferers)
We were here for a long weekend. Unfortunately just in the spring break which made it teeming with children. I have nothing against children, more against their "educators" who do not teach their children how to behave in a hotel. But what do you want if they can't behave themselves either? This will be discussed later.
The reception is fine.A nice spacious lobby with enough staff at the desk so you don't have to wait long. After checking in, the employee told us the way to the room. This was well indicated.
The room we had is spacious, with a good bed and two sofas, a coffee table and a desk with chair. Furthermore, a kettle with coffee and tea. We had reserved with dog and for her was a blanket ready and there was a food and water bowl. Despite this being a "dog room", there was nothing to suggest previous presence of dogs. The room is therefore well cleaned. The bathroom was small but practical and clean.
We had a booking based on overnight stay and breakfast. Before dinner, "we'd see what we do." The first evening we went to eat in the hotel and there we were surprised with an extensive buffet, something for everyone. Cost: €39.00 per person for actually unlimited food and drinks. For this amount you can therefore compose a five course dinner for yourself. What is important to us is that there are dishes without gluten and lactose. There is also plenty of choice here. My wife has been able to eat really tasty desserts for a long time. There are several buffets so it is not really busy either. There are two restaurants, so plenty of room.
The pool and sauna are also beautiful, but here comes the point where I only colored four balls instead of five. Visitors to the pool and saunas do not follow the house rules. People with street footwear around the pool (despite having cover shoes available) and children jumping and diving in the pool, despite several times being indicated with text and icons that this is not allowed. Parents don't correct their children on that!
There are four saunas: an infrared sauna, bio-sauna, saltstone sauna and a Finnish sauna. To enter the sauna room, you must also use your key again. This room is textile-free, children under 16 are not allowed and of course you are not allowed to use a telephone. So what a lot you see there: people in swimwear (one person was even looking around with a tracksuit and street shoes on), children (with or without a parent) and indeed the necessary mobile phones. I have no problem with swimwear and children in the sauna, but they are house rules. I reported it to the reception and I was told that there is actually no one available to supervise there. One night I did see someone from internal security, but he just walked past a sauna with child in it and past a swiping lady.
But all in all we enjoyed this lovely hotel. I don't know if all the rooms look like the ones we had but I can't relate to the negative reviews from a few years ago. We definitely want to come back here again, outside of a school holiday so there are fewer children.

Hotel specializing in bulk handling
"Der" Sauerland Stern, with its 500 rooms or so, is more of a hotel town than a hotel – somewhere between a conference centre, family camp and party legend. The latter is probably especially true “earlier,” because the infamous escapades of past years seem to have retired.
I arrived early in the morning – full of drive and the naive hope that I might already be able to check in. The reception explained to me friendly but definite: “Check-in only from 12:00.” Even my suggestion that I didn’t want to be allowed into my room yet bounced off the hotel facade like a badly targeted snowball. Well – probably “flexibility” was not on the conference schedule this weekend. After all, I was advised to spend the waiting time at the bar. Unfortunately, the bartender acted more like a removalist, because hosts – he kindly returned my greeting, only to ignore me consistently afterwards.
The subsequent tour of the hotel is best summed up by “large, clean, functional”. Everything seems neat, almost a bit too neat – as if architecture and interior style had never really met. The spa boasts saunas, steam baths and treatment rooms, while the pool still seems committed to the scale of a paddling pool. But the house scores points with countless meeting rooms in which you could easily incubate a medium-sized start-up.
The underground passage (a highlight for those who like to combine catacomb feeling with leisure value) leads to the leisure paradise with ice rink, fun pool, cinema and indoor playground – so Disneyland is practically for weekend families in functional jackets.
In the afternoon we were finally allowed to move into our room – newly renovated, friendly, with balcony. The bathroom, however, so compact that you almost accidentally use the light switch when brushing your teeth. Plus: enough space for the four of us. Minus point: Cleaning only every two days – apparently part of the sustainability concept “living with dust as an experience”.
Since we were there for skiing, we would have liked a bit more hut flair – but instead of fireplace romance, this was more of a convention center conference classic. After all, there is a ski storage room that can also dry ski boots. But that’s it with après-ski feeling.
Now to the culinary highlight – where “high point” is meant here more geographically than in taste. Dinner takes place in a hall reminiscent of a university cafeteria – you’re really just waiting for someone to call through today’s dish of the day. The tables long, the buffet tried and tested: French fries, pasta, chicken schnitzel. Vegetables and salad apparently from the manufacturer “Dose & Partner”. Food is served between 18:00 and 20:00, which means: Anyone arriving at 7:55 p.m. must eat quickly or starve quickly. The à la carte restaurant was packed, but rather gave the atmosphere of a “we try, but don’t trust us” evening.
After the first dinner event, we decided to consider the half-board generously as a donation – and from then on to dine out.
The staff was always friendly, but just as you would expect from a team that met on a temporary work portal beforehand. Courteous, striving, but with little scope for individuality. Everything runs neatly according to process – but also without any human surprise.
Conclusion:
A huge, clean, somewhat soulless hotel that has left its best years of partying behind and now specializes primarily in systematically managing many people at once. Perfect if you like conferences – or just want to see what German efficiency looks like when you put on a leisure resort costume.

No customer care!
Our arrival at 9.30pm, hotel serves dinner from 6 to 8pm. Never the hotel staff tried to accommodate us and prepared a packed dinner since we arrived later. We arrived later due to road disruption. This shows no customer care at all. It is a pity, location is very nice, and family room is quite fine. Good luck!

An experience I do not recommend!
As a mother of three (10, 10 and 4 years old), I also have to give my opinion, because what we have experienced is simply unacceptable.
We stayed 4 nights in your property and at no time was the room cleaned. No cleaning, no change of towels, nothing. A family room left completely abandoned, as if our presence did not count.
The most shocking is the restaurant. Arriving at 7:50 pm with three children, when the service is supposed to end at 8 pm, and being denied access... it is incomprehensible. The buffet was still full, the room far from full, and yet we were made to understand that we had to leave. Everything was rid of before our eyes. My children could not even eat. It was snowing outside, impossible to find an alternative at that time, and no empathy from the staff.
The language barrier does not excuse everything. Not speaking a word of English in a hotel that welcomes foreign families, and making no effort to make themselves understood, is extremely frustrating. You feel like you're facing a wall.
We had booked a room with views of the mountains. We ended up in the basement overlooking an embankment. Request for change refused on the grounds that the hotel was full, even though departures took place the same day... hard not to feel mistaken for idiots.
The general attitude of the staff is cold, distant, almost contemptuous. On several occasions, we had the feeling of disturbing. It is very unpleasant, especially with children.
Fortunately, we have joie de vivre and our children too. This will not stop us from continuing to travel and discover other places. But one thing is certain: we will not come back here.

Became a bad hotel
Got super bad. I have been coming here for 35 years but there is nothing left of what was once such a top hotel. Rooms are not cleaned. No clean towels. Insufficient food in the dining room commenting that they have too few staff for a full occupancy. You should have booked fewer rooms. For us what it was last time. Very unfortunate because as it was here in the 90s is long gone. In the evening the disco or the brown cafe no longer open. There's nowhere to drink after 6:00. The bowling alley is closed. And that must have 4 stars. It doesn't even deserve one star anymore.

During busy periods, temporary shortages may occur but are addressed immediately.
Regarding evening activities: our hotel disco is only open on weekends (Friday and Saturday) from 9 p.m. However, there is always at least one venue available for guests in the evening, such as the Trattoria La Stella, with its evening bar open until late.
