The property description on Expedia is incorrect. This tea house does not offer rooms with private bathrooms. Their nicest rooms offer an attached squat toilet with a bucket of water.
There is no sink and no shower in the “private bathroom.” The advertised “hot shower” is a communal hot shower next to the dining room. The western toilet and sinks are also communal.
The owners were unaware of our booking until calling back and forth with someone in Kathmandu. They’re nice people and the tea house is similar to others on the Gokyo Trek, but they should not be advertising it as a 3* hotel with private bathroom on Expedia.

beware of billing practices

We stayed in this teahouse on our 14 day trek to Gokyo. The amenties and food are similar to the other teahouses we stayed in. We had 2 issues with this property: first, was the manner in which we were treated by the owner. He was abrupt and rude throughout our stay. At one point, my husband noticed that the table next to us had cooked tomatoes on their dinner and he asked to have some. He asked the server if the kitchen could throw them on a pan for a few minutes (given that 60% of all trekkers get travelers diarrhea at some point, we had been advised by our guides not to eat raw veggies) and the owner yelled across the dining room "the kitchen is too busy for that." We were surprised by his response given that everyone else we came in contact with in Nepal was incredibly gracious and helpful. The second issue came when we were presented with our bill for the night and it was significantly higher than we expected. We were travelling with a trekking company so our breakfast, lunch and dinner was included in our stay. However, unlike in any other lodge we stayed in, here we were limited to 1 cup of tea and 1 item from the menu for each meal. We were not informed of this difference. We found the portion sizes in many places much larger than we could eat, so given that everything must be carried in by porters and animals, we often ordered a half portion of a meal. Then if we were still hungry, we would order something additional (not the other half of the dal baht but an order of papad or soup for example). He insisted that we pay separately for anything additional that we ordered after we put our initial order in, even though we were generally only ordering half portions of food and had not been limited to 1 menu item and 1 cup of tea in any other teahouse. The owner became angry when I questioned the charges and tried to explain that we had not experienced this anywhere else. He accused me of not understanding how things work in Nepal and how expensive things like water are in Nepal. Given that I was on vacation, I opted not to argue with him and paid the bill. But I would not recommend this teahouse given our unfortunate experience.

Hi Tiffany, thank you for your biased review. Now let me explain and address your queries. Once in a while, we get people like you in our lodge. You could have easily approached me with this queries personally right then and i would have explained, but you are one of those person who prefer to hide behind your laptop screen and write whatever you want. But i am happy to address your queries now too. Well regarding the food choices from our menu, that you have to deal with your Trekking Company, to whom you might have paid a fortune but the same does not apply to us. They have paid us a fixed amount for one person and according to that you will get served. Please also be mindful that, every single lodge is different and they have their own arrangements with the lodges. The right place to raise this complaint is the trekking company you booked through, not us. I hope this addresses one of your issue. Bottom line for this issue is...go and sort it out with your trekking company..crying here will not help. You only get what you have paid for (to us not to them). Just because you have paid well to your company (not the lodge..mind you) does not mean you will be treated special in the mountains..welcome to the real world...secondly, you were asking for a pot of tea for some of you and 3 to 4 cups of Hot Chocolates for some (which is impossible for what your company has paid us)..and yes i remember you very well..you were in a group of 4..with two Indians. Just to let you know, here is what you got, for what we were paid for..let me break it down for you..Breakfast: a cup of tea/coffee with your choice of breakfast from the menu ( maybe an additional tea or coffee if you had been in your good behavior ), Lunch: a cup of tea/coffee with your choice of meal from the menu ( you guys had bakery items in addition to the main meal, which i happily charged for and i have the right to do so ), lastly, Dinner: same choice as Lunch ( again extra drinks and bakery items we charged for).
Now, let me explain, how were you guys during your stay. On that very day, we were fully booked with roughly 50 guests and were very busy attending to everyone's needs. You might be the queen bee at your home, but not for us. All the customers are equal to us. Sorry, we don't give special treatment to individuals unless you are sick, elderly or a minor..which you are not. Take it with a grain of salt. The moment you guys stepped in, you guys bombarded me with a special request with every single order of yours..for example, one of you ordered rice with veg curry ( your special request was to only serve you half the amount of food and to keep the remaining half of both rice and curry heated and on standby, so that if you feel like eating more, it should be ready..and i had a house full of customers to serve..again we did that for you..however, after devouring the delicious food of ours, you asked for the remaining and ate that up too..now don't tell me that you are being mindful as i dont buy it..this does not apply to you guys..you say one thing and do another..typical hypocrites and wannabees). This is just a tip of the iceberg..i don't want to waste my time. So let me cut it short for you, lets talk about that breakfast of your dear husband..he ordered a veg sandwich the night before for the next days breakfast (not dinner, you forgot which is normal in the mountains) it helps us to do the preparation in advance and on that day like i said we were almost fully occupied. But, during the service time, when we were serving 50 customers, he comes up with a brilliant idea that he needs some tomatoes sliced and grilled as per his own specific request..not underdone..not overdone..(out of his order) but has to be perfect as per his requirement. Obviously, by that morning, i was already tired of addressing your special requests time and again. And yes, i firmly told you, the kitchen was very busy. No Regrets.

I’m a former Lonely Planet author (books and their editions include Panama 1, Las Vegas 1, Dominican & Haiti 1, Yucatán 1, and one-third of Mexico 5). I’ve stayed at several thousand hotels. I have my favorites and among them is the Namgyal. It’s not only comfortable, with a wonderful dining room/hang out area, solar room, private bathrooms, hot showers (!!!) and delicious food—best veggie burger I’ve ever had, savory Sherpa stew and divine apple pie—but it’s a place you want to stay for two days if you’re en route to Gokyo Ri—or if you want to greatly increase you’re odds of photographing Mt. Everest. My wife Susan and I stayed at Namgyal two nights and we are delighted we did. That’s because, in addition to the reasons given above, there’s a trail that starts at the lodge and winds 1285 feet up a hillside directly behind it. The elevation gain put us above Gokyo, which means that we had an easy time reaching Gokyo when we left Machhermo for it the next day; we were properly acclimatized. Also from the hill above the Namgyal it’s possible to get an excellent shot of the summit of Mt. Everest. I’ve attached a pic I took of it from that spot using an older point-and-shoot camera (the photo was not taken using a high-powered lens). That photo proved important to me, b/c Everest was hidden by clouds from Gokyo Ri the day I summited it. Without the shot at Machhermo, I would not have captured an image of the world’s greatest mountain. Also, the Namgyal’s owner is super-helpful.

Rest day in Machermo

Our rest day at the Namgyal Lodge was one of my favourite day. There is this great sun room where you can rest/eat during a day and it's so warm you can truly recharge your battery. We had a room with attached toilet. Clean and basic. A bit expensive but the food is very nice and owners are very helpful and welcoming. That you for making our 2 day stop so pleasant. Also on the positive site you can contact them directly to book the room and the communication is first class! Thank you for all your support guys, keep up a food work and keep in touch.
