My favorite campsite

This is one of my favourite Kiwi camp sites.
The location is outstanding, the beach, the river where it's safe to swim, kayak or paddleboard.
A Punekaiki sunset is magic.
We were in our tent and the camp spots are lovely.
I don't care about the fact there is only WiFi in the kitchen, peaceful!
Yes, the facilities are not the most flash but they were clean which is more important.
Staff were friendly, all good.
I love Pete's little shack where you can get a coffee in the morning and whitebait and ice cream later in the day.
The pub on the corner has lovely meals so that's another plus.
I keep coming back.
If you want luxury camping, go somewhere else, we don't care

Additional Charges after stay taken out of Credit Card

We stayed in at Punakaiki Beach Camp during wet weather and did not have a great experience. The Campground got saturated and it was not possible to access our camper-van without standing in ankle-deep water . The whole area was poorly lid, we did not see where we walked after returning from dinner.
We had to move our van during the night to higher ground to not get bogged.
Worst experience is that our friends in the group got charged 50% additional fee (for a house) based on wrong/untrue assumptions.
They refused to clarify and where not willing to refund after clarification from our end. Very poor communication and unauthorized access to the credit-card, required to book this place. Be very careful and try to pay cash instead of leaving your credit card details with them, they will take you on a ride. Best to avoid place all together.
Big downer on our 2-week trip around the South Island - guess you always got one ;-)

Great spot . Cabin we stayed in could do with an insect screen on one window at least to keep sandflys out and allow some ventilation.
Also not enough toilet/ show facilities for size of camp . Accomodation there has grown but the facilities have not .

Money for old rope

We really disliked Punakaki Beach Camp. Beyond reception, the site was scruffy, with only patches of grass. The pitches were poorly delineated, resulting in a mish mash of positioning. There are few facilities. WiFi is limited to a radius a few yards from the communal area. The only saving grace is its proximity to the beach and to the Pancake Rocks. In fact, we think it realises that people will keep using it because of this,and therefore it needn’t bother trying to improve their experience. They are getting money for old rope.

It was a great stay, easy to check in and out. The washrooms were clean and close enough to my cabin that I didn't have to walk too far. I loved that the beach was really close to walk to as well.
