Excellent small hotel - great staff!
I have stayed at this little hotel in Trujillo a few times now because I have had an excellent experience each time. The price per room is more than reasonable, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff are wonderfully helpful, and they serve a very nice fresh breakfast every morning. They have 4 floors and don't have an elevator, but many of the family-owned hotels that I have stayed in while traveling in South America and Europe don't, so it's not a deal breaker for me. I only mention it so you're not surprised. If you're headed to Trujillo, Peru for a few days and like a good value along with great service, I would highly recommend El Escudero Lodge. I know I'll be staying there again!

Great Hotel, Excellent Value
My family and I took a trip to Trujillo and we had an amazing time, most of it because of this hotel and their knowledgeable staff. This hotel is the epitome of a family business, the owner (Señora Margarita) is often the receptionist, her son is the bellman, and the cousin is the cab and chauffeur driver. The hotel itself is a bit far from the airport, however, if you call ahead the staff will arrange a vehicle to pick you up (for a small fee).
The staff is extremely helpful and the owner will go out of her way to make sure that you are comfortable, always introduce yourself to her and compliment the positive comments that you have read on TripAdvisor, she takes big pride of it.
In terms of the rooms, keep in mind that many hotels in Peru do not have elevators so if you have issues climbing up 4 levels of stairs perhaps your should mention that you desire one of the rooms by the common area, which by the way, may be a little noisy as people tend to gather around here while they wait on their tour guides and breakfast.
The hotel works with Moche Tours, which is a very good tour company and their prices are very competitive, so it's a definitely go ahead with this touring company as well.
All around, the hotel itself is basic and unpretentious, but the price and the willingness of the staff to make sure that you have a good time is by far worth the stay.

Nice, clean rooms
Let's start with the good stuff! The staff are helpful but little English. The rooms are clean. They arrange tours.(and even help when silly tourists like us book in for the wrong day!!) Breakfast is okay- from 7am. Eggs, bread, jam, coffee, juice. Towels folded into cute little animal shapes!
The not so good: The 3 day special rate offered by the hotel was much lower than the special rate we paid with booking.com. yet we had to pay the higher rate.Wi fi was at best spasmodic-for the last 2 days we had none- not even in the common areas. The tv remote didn't work but was replaced the next day.The shower was hard to control- you chose between too hot/too cold. We asked for a room away from stairwells- guess what? We were on a mezanine level- half way up the stairs!!! The area around the hotel is nice but a long walk from the main square where most cafes /restaurants are located- seemed like the walk was even longer after long sight seeing tours.Worst of all- we used the laundry service 2 days before leaving.The night before we left still. no laundry- then there seemed to be a mad panic to find it- took about an hour- clothes were still. damp and crumpled- no real effort to fold them- very disappointing! When you have been travelling for 7 months, one of life's simple pleasures is getting your laundry returned smelling clean and neatly folded!! Also the next morning we discovered that the washable belt on my husband's travel pants, was missing- no biggie except that he's lost weight while travelling!!I think there are better deals in Trujillo.

In its category excellent and great value
Clean, comfortable, value for money, excellent friendly staff.
This is not for people who want creature comforts. It's clean, fairly basic in decor and finishes but everything works (hot water was fine but there was a hint that with more people it would have been a bit erratic). WIFI, PC and printer (free). TV is fine with a couple of english film channels. Lounge downstairs and a small eating are for breakfast (which is limited in choice but ample). Free pick up from airport (but not drop off - S./20 local taxi)
Staff could not be nicer. We had a small problem with one room and they immediately changed us. Let us levee our bags in the room and relax at the end of the day before our flight. Call you taxis, give good local food tips and will book you tours (pickup at hotel or in centre). Super friendly (we found all of Trujillo like that). They use Moche Tours who were very good (we were told Trujillo Tours was good also but didn't use them).
Not in the centre but you can walk in the day. Taxis (they call) are S./4-5

wonderful staff
This lodge is located in a nice suburb. Close to everything. Had some problems with hot water but i thinks its usual in peru. What I love of this place is the lovely staff. They make you life easier. They give you advice and help you with the bus schedule. They are just so helpful.
