Fascinating experience staying in a wonderful restored village house

Despite coming to Portugal since I was a child and owning a house here, I had never heard of the miracle of Brotas - so this was a fascinating discovery. Centuries before the money-making machine that is Fátima got going, pilgrims were trekking to Brotas to give thanks and worship at the church which sits at the top of the main street of this tiny Alentejan village. They would stay in houses named for the brotherhood or fraternity of the place they'd come from. Today, many of these houses form part of the tourist accommodation in the village. Sympathetically but practically refurbished, they provide good quality accommodation giving an insight into village life that is little changed over time, with the obvious exception of the "iconic" N2 road that cuts right through the village (which is how we came to be there). A wonderful lady who is a native of the village runs the houses and offers breakfast in a fabulous dining room in one of the houses, with amazing photos of original traditional items from village/country life. We arrived the night before their village festival which was clearly shaping up to be a very big event. Local restaurant 'O Poco' is your dinner option. All very good value but most of all, a fascinating experience. Don't come if you need hotel slippers and 24hour room service, it's not that sort of thing.

Homes of romania

Excellent location, very friendly and attentive service, the interior of the house where we stayed was very rustic and decorated q.b. . Very simple but homemade breakfast in a very pleasant space. For those looking for simplicity and tranquility I recommend. Rural tourism is just for those who like it. I LOVE

What’s not to like! Maria is an excellent host. Breakfast was amazing. The rooms very spacious and the apartment was clean and perfect for my needs. Also excellent value for money.

Very nice experience overall.

If you look for a quiet place to rest near Mora this is the one, very friendly host at Casas de Romaria, House as clean and spay, equipped kitchen and AC in every room. Breakfast made with local products and included on price. Many thanks for all.
