Wonderful, with one significant caveat
The location could hardly be better: literally on the town square, with a stunning view over the lake. We stayed for 2 nights in a 3rd floor junior suite #301 with a very large terrace, which was furnished with a dining set, umbrella and two padded loungers. It was a wonderful place to unwind and take in the view.
The spacious, classically-furnished suite was comfortable, with 2 comfy armchairs, a desk and a particularly useful hall table — perfect for keeping sunglasses, keys and phones. The bathroom had large windows bringing in natural light, as well as a bidet, and a shower/tub combination that had an awkwardly placed shower-head in the middle of the wall rather than at the end, making it difficult to shower without splashing the floor. One small omission: there were no washcloths.
The king bed was exceedingly comfortable, and I believe the staff had kindly added a plush mattress topper at my request. The pillows were also good. Unfortunately, the bedding was much too heavy for the weather. The sheets were flannel-like and the duvet and its cover were very thick. Hallstatt was extremely hot during our stay and, as there is no air-conditioning in the hotels, we sweltered at night — particularly on the 3rd floor. The hotel provided a small Dyson fan, but it simply wasn’t powerful enough to make much difference. We understand the restrictions on air-conditioning, but the hotel could easily improve the situation by providing substantially larger, stronger fans and lighter summer bedding.
One person deserves special mention: Claudia, the housekeeper, was exceptional — hands down the best we have encountered in our travels. She had a wonderfully positive, “fix any problem” and “provide any service” attitude, and went well beyond expectations, even looking after us after her working hours. Claudia is an immense credit to the hotel and made our 2-night stay particularly enjoyable.
Breakfast offered a good selection of both savoury and sweet options, although everything was buffet-style and nothing was made to order. Dinner was tasty.
And if you’re inclined, you can simply slip into the lake from the ladder on the dock directly in front of the hotel. I did — and it was heavenly.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel for its charming furnishings, spectacular lakefront setting and unbeatable location. With a few very inexpensive improvements — namely stronger fans and lighter bedding in hot weather — management could make an appealing hotel considerably more comfortable.

Avoid This Restaurant – Extremely Disappointing Experience
Before being seated, we clearly informed the staff that if a table by the seaside became available, we would like to move there. Despite this, Restaurant Manager Robert refused our request simply because we had already placed our order.
His attitude was extremely rude, aggressive, and unprofessional. He told us in a harsh tone that we either had to pay for the food or leave the restaurant immediately. We felt unwelcome and were treated with complete disrespect.
As a result, we had to pay €34.70 for a meal that we never even ate.
This experience completely ruined our visit. We cannot recommend this restaurant and strongly advise others to consider alternative places where guests are treated with respect.

Breathtaking View & late Check in
Our stay in Hallstatt was absolutely unforgettable. The views here are truly breathtaking and unlike anything else in the world, with the dramatic mountains meeting the serene lake. While the standard check-in time wasn't until 3:00 PM, we found the perfect strategy to enjoy this popular destination. I highly recommend arriving later in the afternoon or early evening. Once the last ferries leave and the heavy crowds of day-trippers depart, the town completely transforms. Walking through the quiet, winding streets at evening feels like you have the entire fairytale village all to yourself. It is peaceful, romantic, and the absolute best way to experience Hallstatt's true charm. If you want to avoid the crowds and see the town at its best, plan for a later arrival and enjoy the evening calm!

Do not eat there
DONT GO THERE TO EAT.
I write it in english, so nothing gets lost in translation. The restaurant was recommended to me second hand. So I gave it a try, mainly for the location next to the lake.
From the 70 Euro I paid for 2 PAX it was worth 20 Euros for food and drinks, the 50 for the view.
We had Schlutzkrapfen and Kasnocken. Nothing complicated, but they absolutly made me regret it.
They arrived 30 seconds after we received the couvert. For both we waited about 20 minutes or so - so 0 stars for the service. Especially for not exusing them for their mistake.
The food was not warm. Both were quite dry. I know butter is expensive these days, but wtf - nothing at all. We could argue about some grated parmesan, but dont need to.
So 1 star for the kitchen team in serving convinience products warmed up for several times already.
0 stars for the management, to let this happen.

Nice - possibly the best - Hallstatt hotel - but getting in and out of the town was problematic
The Seehotel Gruener Baum is the best-located hotel in Hallstatt, right beside the Evangelical Church, which is supposed to be the center of the town. It actually sits in front of the small town's main square - how can you get better situated than that?
We were given the room on the 4th floor. The problem was - the elevator only worked till the 3rd. So we had to hoist the luggage up and down to the 4th personally. The other major inconvenience was that cars were not allowed into the town - they could only stay at the upper highway levels. So you had to ask for a hotel van to come up and bring your luggage down - and that took a lot of time. Especially since no one was answering from the hotel when we tried to call. Then the same problem when leaving the hotel - the hotel had to get a taxi for you - at your expense - to bring you and your luggage up to the upper highway levels. We were on a tight time schedule - so that caused a major problem for us.
The room was large and high ceilinged - but since it was on the top floor, one wall was very heavily angled and we kept hitting our heads on the ceiling till we figured out to look before getting up from the chair or the bed.
There was no ac- they had a Dyson blameless fan - but that worked well enough to combat the summer heat.
Breakfast was very good.
