A Rare and Authentic Sanctuary of Peace – Onar Andros
We visited Onar Andros for one week as the first stop of a Greece itinerary, which later included Montanema Handmade Village and a stay on Lefkada. While European beach destinations are increasingly prone to overtourism and artificial lifestyle-staging, Onar delivers exactly what has become so difficult to find: a genuine, unpretentious oasis of calm integrated seamlessly into a rugged and beautiful natural environment.
Our arrival set the tone for the entire concept. The journey to the resort leads through a famously adventurous, unpaved dirt road into the isolated Achla Bay. It is important to emphasize that this infrastructure should not be criticized; rather, it is the very core of Onar’s DNA. This rough approach acts as a natural shield that keeps the mass crowds away. Travelers who cannot accept this should choose a different destination. For us, it marked the exact moment of disconnecting from the modern world.
The location itself is exceptionally beautiful. The resort sits where a freshwater river meets the sea, creating a lush green valley filled with actual, mature trees, rock formations, and immense privacy. It is an incredibly quiet, unobtrusive property where you are constantly surrounded by the sounds of nature.
The beach itself features clear, beautiful Aegean-blue water and a classic Greek pebble shoreline. Depending on personal sensitivity, swim shoes are recommended for entering the water. One of the greatest highlights was the rhythm of the day: at 8:00 AM, even during absolute peak season, the beach was often completely empty.
A unique dynamic of Achla Bay is how it reacts to the Meltemi winds. On days when the sea is rough, day-trip boats and yachts cannot anchor in the bay, meaning the beach belongs exclusively to Onar guests—these were undoubtedly the best and most peaceful days of our stay. On calmer days, up to ten boats might arrive, but even then, it remains vastly quieter than typical Greek tourist beaches. For shade, the resort provides a clever and minimalist solution: you bring your own sun sail from the property and attach it to wooden poles permanently fixed in the sand.
We stayed in a Sunrise Villa located up on the hillside. The villa's infrastructure and hardware are functional, solid, and reasonable—entirely appropriate for a well-maintained three-star standard. You will not find high-end design highlights indoors; the interior focuses purely on function because the actual lifestyle here takes place outdoors.
The villa features a remarkably long and spacious private pool that is genuinely large enough to swim actual laps, which we thoroughly enjoyed. In terms of privacy, a small pathway runs past the villa, meaning you are somewhat visible when sitting on the terrace. However, because traffic on the hillside is very low, it never became a major issue, though it is worth noting that it does not offer absolute isolation.
The service style perfectly matches the relaxed, familial positioning of the resort. There are no butler services or formal staff in uniform greeting you with rehearsed lines. Instead, the property is run by normal, incredibly warm-hearted people. The occasional small imperfection in service actually added to the charm, and all communication was handled easily and efficiently via WhatsApp. It is a completely unhurried, zero-activity atmosphere focused 100% on rest.
The culinary offering was absolutely solid. Breakfast is understandably less complex than in a five-star mega-resort, but it was fully satisfying and included various fresh egg dishes. Because we did not have a rental car, we ate exclusively at the resort restaurant. The food is traditional, local, and thoroughly appropriate. Naturally, when cooking for a very small number of accommodations over a full week, the menu will eventually repeat itself, which is entirely understandable given the logistics of the location.
In terms of potential areas for improvement, the resort could consider an upgrade to its facilities for younger travelers. Onar attracts a noticeable number of families with children of various ages. Aside from a small slide and a nest swing, there is very little for them to do. Furthermore, the existing equipment has reached the end of its lifespan and feels quite run-down; it needs a fresh update. No one expects or wants a supervised kids' club—Onar must remain Onar—but a few small, thoughtful additions would provide welcome variety for children who might find the adult-centric silence a bit long after a few days.
Would we return? Yes, definitely. We are heading to the Dolomites next year, but Onar will absolutely remain on our shortlist for a peaceful Mediterranean escape. It is not an Instagram-driven, curated fantasy world. It is raw, authentic Greece—a true sanctuary of peace that has become exceptionally rare to find anywhere in Europe.

I have never been so relaxed
A rare find. Somewhere close to nature, utterly authentic, with understated stunning architecture, a beach with clean sea, staffed by exceptionally friendly people. You’ll hear an owl at night, pass turtles and swans on your way to the beach. Your room with a stunning view of valley and sea may be visited by a passing goat or sheep, you will eat delicious food, much of it grown on site. This is a haven - an antidote to over tourism. Anyone with a soul will treasure what is on offer here.

Less is more and far away!
Fantastic location, secluded bay, great architecture of the houses, very good food, super nice service, privacy, clear water, peace, luxurious simplicity, great hiking opportunities, emerald lizards, pygmy owl, sheep and goats, riverbed with waterfall.

Paradise on earth
Onar is paradise on earth. Amazing nature, crystal clear waters in a secluded beach and an eco-friendly resort with absolute respect for nature. Here the luxury is hidden in that you can switch off completely, reconnect with what is important for you and relax.
If you like Mykonos or Ibiza in August, then Onar is not for you. If, however, you are looking for a place with amazing energy, friendly staff, a relaxing atmosphere and privacy, then we cannot recommend it enough.
