More that we dare to dream

We arrived at the hotel with not high expectation. They accept pets, we have a Golden Retriever, and for Romania is a big step to accept a big dog in a 4 star hotel.
The hotel is like a portal to another time, a more romantic era.
The food is very tasty and the restaurant is also petfiendly.

Far below 4-star standards – disappointing and overpriced

Our experience at Hotel Carol was deeply disappointing and does not justify its 4-star classification or the high rates charged.
From the moment we arrived, several basic shortcomings were evident. The snow in front of the hotel was not cleared, which is a serious safety issue for guests. There is no ramp for baby strollers or luggage, making access unnecessarily difficult for families and elderly guests.
Another major concern is the absence of a night reception, which is unacceptable for a hotel claiming this level of service and raises questions about guest support and safety.
We booked the best available room, yet it was mediocre in terms of amenities and cleanliness. There was no trash bin in the room, only a very small one in the bathroom. The bathroom itself was poorly cleaned, with visible hair in the shower cabin, indicating superficial housekeeping. Moreover, by late morning / early afternoon the room had not been cleaned at all.
Basic in-room amenities are missing: there is no kettle or electric boiler, so guests cannot prepare a simple tea or coffee. This is standard even in many lower-category hotels.
Breakfast (buffet style) was limited, low quality, and lacking variety, completely inconsistent with the prices charged. More concerning was the attitude of the staff, which was cold, rigid, and lacking empathy—particularly toward guests with small children. When I politely asked where the forks were, the response was given with the staff member’s back turned, which reflects poor training and a lack of professionalism.
Service at the hotel restaurant followed the same pattern: impersonal, distant, and indifferent to guests.
Due to the accumulation of these issues, we decided to leave after the first night, despite having paid for an additional one.
Conclusion:
This property does not deliver the infrastructure, services, cleanliness, or hospitality expected of a true 4-star hotel. The current classification is difficult to understand, and based on our experience, unjustified. I cannot recommend this hotel, especially to families or travelers expecting professional hospitality standards.

If you like vintage hotels…

The hotel has a great oldish atmosphere. If you like this - it is 150years old! It has the best breakfast from all the hotels we stayed in this trip. Beware because it has no lift and it has stairs!! It’s not easy to carry the luggage upstairs unless you’re a weightlifter. This is an excellent advice re all hotels in Romania: check carefully that they are accessible for guests your age: elevator, no unavoidable stairs.

Great value for money

Arrived late to the Hotel. Friendly reception, clean room, bathroom a bit worn down, you can say that this hotel is extremely busy over the year...
Breakfast nice and a la carte.
I can recommend this hotel if you're visiting Vatra Dornei!

Nice hotel, very good restaurant

The hotel is located in the center of Vatra Dornei, very close to the park and also to the railway station Vatra Dornei Bai. It is a nicely restored historic building, very clean and neat, nicely furbished. We had a room at the first floor which I found preferable to the ground floor, as main side of the building is directly to the street frontage. As far as I could get an idea, there hardly are two identical rooms - most likely each of them is one of a kind. The rooms are large enough, but some of them considerably larger than the others. Cleanliness and service are fine. Buffet breakfast is included, the food is very good quality, diverse and in copious amounts. A place I would definitely go back again.
