Wonderful place to enjoy the national park
Few tips to get out of way
-I did not realize that not all rooms had AC. In summer, you need AC!
-There is basically no cell service and the only wifi is in lodge and pretty slow. So good way to unplug but if you have some work deadline coming up,Beware!
-bring bug spray-just like rest of country have mosquitoes in summer
I really enjoyed our room in Rapidan building. We had a view of the ridge and outdoor seating in back. It was quaint wood paneling, but had fridge. Exquisitely clean. The bathroom was oldstyle motel with tile, bathtub shower. I loved this. When I go to NYC, I want a upscale hotel room. When I go hiking, I want a clean, functional room with character. This was it.
I fell unexpectedly in love with Shenandoah. It is this lovely green stretch along Skyline drive for 85 miles. There are hundreds of places to stop, hike, etc. But in contrast to some parks, such as Rocky, you cant just drive into town to get fudge or a quick bite as there are only a few entrance points . This lodge helped us make the most of it.
-Onsite at the property there are entrance points at least 2!great hikes so no driving (Lewis falls). There are some others very close drive (Rose river falls)
-there is great porch and cool great room where u can socialize, play games, have a drink, watch the sunset
-there is a diverse group of people staying here- very old, very young families, hikers, college kids
-we enjoyed the food at the restaurants that is regional but veggie friendly
-in our room was mini fridge-I strongly advise to bring hiking snacks, water bottles to fill in the water filter in lobby. Again not a place where u can stop by a 7-11 on way to hike to grab a protein bar.
-I just loved hiking here, it was moderately strenuous and hiking sticks helpful but not as stressful as the west where you need to be on hill by 6 am. We got going by 830 and missed the crowds
-saw many wildlife on property including owl, mom with baby deer
Basically this is perfect place to unplug, hike, unwind. I thought this was one time trip but defintely coming back.

Disappointing
Another issue is that the room was very warm. On the website they say there is no air conditioning, and it’s not needed because it gets cool at night. They do provide a fan, but it’s a small cheap one that may work for one person, but considering it’s a large family room, it’s not adequate. Even worse, it stopped working and when I went downstairs for a replacement, the front desk person (which was nice) said everyone had left so I’ll have to wait until the next day for a replacement. So, we had some difficulty going to sleep because of the temperature so that’s not good. I know adding AC would be a major expense so I doubt they will ever add it, but at the very least, they should provide at least one or two bigger box fans per room.
The food service was another big adventure. We arrived at the main restaurant about 15 minutes before they closed and thankfully, they were nice enough to allow us to place a to-go order, so I made sure to give an above average tip. However, I regret doing that because by the time we got back to the room and checked, there were multiple items missing from my daughter’s meal and by then, everyone was gone.
The next day we went to the Starbucks-like place to grab a drink and small item to go. The line was long and I felt bad for the worker as she tried her best, but they really need at least two people, especially to make the various drinks. My daughter wanted a refresher, and they were out of it. I then grabbed a fruit cup and noticed the expiration date was a day before but assumed it would still be good. However, as I dove into it, the fruit tasted terrible and the watermelon piece fell apart. I showed it to the worker, and she agreed it was bad and offered another cup, and the best I could do was one that expired that day and was only slightly better. Worst of all, we saw them bring in a new set of muffins and my daughter claimed she saw a spider on the plate, but I didn’t see it. In either case, another fail.
It wasn’t a complete loss, as they do have a pub/bar on the lower level and they have a surprisingly decent menu and we had dinner there the last night and it was much better.
We’ve been to around 30 national parks and have stayed at various lodging in the park, with many of them being historic. This definitely was towards the bottom of the list and if we ever came back, we wouldn’t stay here and perhaps try Skyline instead.
