Rainforest beauty
Highly recommend!
We went for two hikes in the rainforest. One small and one big, it was very nice to do both tours. During the small hike we saw a lot of animals, amazing threes and waterfalls. During the long hike we walked a challenging, fun and breathtaking road that took us up to 702 meters above sea level. It was really cool!

Mixed Feelings
I was also told that the location is 4WD access only. I was concerned because our arrival was via scooter.I was informed that we would be met and guided in as scooter access was ok. Once we arrived at deniyaya we called the hostel and were told we could find the location ourselves. This was not so easy and thanks to a local giving us instructions eventually we found it. The road in is clearly not suitable for a scooter and our rented scooter sustained some damage.
Once we arrived at the hostel we were shown to our room in the resort section and were pleasantly surprised with the basic but quite beautiful room with an amazing view. We were offered the long tour through the rainforest and to two waterfalls at a cost of 35USD... finding this a little expensive we decided we could take our own tour. On entering the rainforest we found a ticket office offering local guides and entered the forest at less that 3000LKR for two for the short tour. This tour was sufficient and our guide allowed us as much time as we wished swimming in the beautiful waterfall. We were very pleasled with this two hour tour.
The location is amazing and spectacularly beautiful however we were dismayed at the cost of the food. 1200LKR each for the local dish of rice and curry. The food was spectacular but just as good as locally priced rice and curry usually 300LKR.
The Food bill for our stay exceed the cost of our two nights accommodation. I bought with me local money which I thought would be sufficient..when i realise that i would not have enough to cover the food costs i enquired if i could use a travel card for payment. This was confirmed but on check out it was found my card was not suitable. Therefore we were forced to make a trip.into deniyaya to the nearest ATM. This round trip took almost one hour. The woman dealing with this showed a judgemental, rude disposition toward my problem as did the owner when he arrived. After payment his attitude changed a little and he offered us a complimentary breakfast. This was a nice guesture but we refused preferring to find a nice local breakfast on our way home.
My main issue with Sinharaja hostel is their advertisement as a place perfect for budget travellers. I feel that they advertise this and reasonable room rates but make their money through the hidden costs of overpriced tours and expensive food.
I enjoyed my stay but it ended on a sour note due to the expense of the food and lack of payment options.

Don't even think about it
We complained to the management but all we got was a lame sorry that didn't blame the guide or anyone.
Do not go to this place, or if you have to, don't take their tour. We felt like we were on a school trip guided by an incompetent teacher who claims to have been working for 7 years!
Also even we booked through booking.com, it doesn't allow us to write a review after our stay. It is like we are blocked!

Horrible owner - awful experience. Avoid!
Owner wasn't there when we arrived so we were greeted by people who couldn't communicate with us, not a problem as we got by.
Met a guy also staying there and he had booked a guide to the rainforest so we thought we join him to split costs. Great.
The owner then spoke to this guy on the phone and told him if he didn't book the guide through him he had to check out early the next morning, leaving him no where to put his rucksack. (Check out should have been 1pm!)
The owner then spoke to me on the phone and asked to book a guide with him, I explained I already had one. He told me to cancel it and go with him. I said no, that's rude. He was very aggressive on the phone. He then mentioned the mafia to me, I couldn't understand everything due to language barrier but it was as though he was threatening me, trying to intimidate me and making me feel very uncomfortable. Especially given the fact we were up in the sticks of the rainforest, it didn't feel great.
He told us to leave. Then he told us to check out early and not leave luggage.
We ended up going over to the other guesthouse that we could see from this hostel, they allowed us to keep our bags there so we could go for our forest hike.
This was the worst experience of Sri Lanka and this owner has been a shocking example for his country.
I'd avoid this place like the plague!
Such a shame because it's so close to the entrance but customer service was disgusting

Therefore we have a right to refuse if our customer accepting same offer for the some part of service.
You feel embarrassing because you STEEL OUR BATH TOVELS and our staff waiting for you till come out from the forest. As a European person we are not accepted that type of thing.

Expensive stay & hike tour!
The location of this ho(s)tel is beautiful, so close to the rainforest, but we did not enjoy the stay at all. The rooms are ok, but overprized and the guided tours they organize in the rainforest are very expensive. $25 per person for the short hike!
The entrance of the rainforest is just behind the breakfast area and you can ask for a guide there, we payed much less and the money goes directly to the guide (all local people from the village).
We met nice people in the ho(s)tel, but did not like the attitude of the owner, Prasad, who was clearly not amused that we did not book the expensive hike tour.
