Fabulous stay at a top notch relaxing small hotel with Henrietta and her team on hand to make everything happen.
We arrived at Why House for our 2 night stay feeling particularly under the weather with an ongoing stomach bug. Henrietta greeted us and immediately set about tending to our needs- such fabulous service and a welcome like no other! We soon settled in to our fabulous room ( room 1) and enjoyed the surroundings and pool area. Food at Why House is exceptional - the menu was adapted to our situation and helped us on the mend. By day 2 we were enjoying the full menu and our delicious breakfast options. We took a tuk tuk ride into Galle and had an enjoyable afternoon there- the journey time was about 20 mins. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time in the beautiful grounds and pool area, taking dips and watching an amazing array of birds. Such a chilled out, special place. Henrietta makes everything flow and is there to attend to any needs. Her staff work so well, ring a bell and a gin and tonic will appear as if by magic! The highlight of our Sri Lankan stay, small and intimate but unstuffy and fun. Just perfect, thank you. We will be back

Laid back luxury
A gorgeous blend of colonial opulence, modern day expectations, laid back luxury and Sri Lankan style, our family of 5 loved our 2 nights here. A boutique hotel with beautiful rooms, a “nothing is too much trouble attitude” and excellent food at reasonable prices. Our kids were allowed to swim late at night on arrival, we rang a bell for tea delivery to our room, and bolognese was made “off menu” for our tired hangry daughter. Great pool, a volleyball net, cricket gear, and resident friendly dogs topped it off. Highly recommend for families, couples, anyone really!

Post Colonial Sanctuary, and Doting
Tucked off a narrow, little-traveled road, Why House is ethereal post-colonial romantic. The grounds are lush with palms and hanging orchids, and there’s an ample pool that non-guests sometimes use. Henrietta, the English hostess and part owner, greets you with her darling dachshund, Violet. Dachshunds are the theme here — stuffed ones lie curled up on every bed.
I stayed in Bungalow 7: comfy bed, luxurious bathtub in a separate bathroom.
The vibe is so private you feel like a guest in a friend’s well-appointed home — until the bill arrives. It was low season and rooms were 30% off, so there was good value.
The food is exquisite and fresh, ranging from a very simple salad to tuna steak or chicken biryani with coconut chutney. Hen dines at 7, and the place is small enough that if she’s there, you’re dining at 7 too. She is very chatty.
Most hotels and restaurants are only as good as their owners. An owner who’s actually there — in the dining room, at the table — is what separates a business from a loved one, and you can taste the difference the moment they’re gone. Henrietta is always there. She dotes: when a young woman traveling alone fell ill during my stay, Hen looked after her completely, and the same instinct fills the dinner silences. For better or worse, she comes with the hotel.
One bit of advice: don’t let the staff photograph your passport in full. The number alone should suffice — otherwise you may find certain details from it turning up in dinner conversation.

A Haven in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean
Tranquility and charm—a gem nested in lush greenery.
We spent four nights at Why House, Galle with friends. We felt fully recharged, pampered and nourished with both delicious & interesting dishes every meal from breakfast to dinner! Special thanks to Henrietta who has made us feel so welcome and cared for in every minute detail! We have one of the most relaxing massage sessions! The service from the team is impeccable! It is a truly remarkable sanctuary!
Thank you all at Why House for a very memorable time! Will certainly return!!

Moments in paradise
Why House breaths relaxation, tranquility with a hint of the colonial era within the marvellous attentiveness of the staff. Nothing is too much trouble and standards are held in high regard.
The entire property reflects the charm of Ceylon. The pool is thoughtfully designed surrounded by exotic foliage, whilst coconut palms are bedecked with colourful orchids sprouting from their trunks.
It has a truly magical atmosphere accompanied by marvellous food and to top this off, our golden retriever had a warm welcome and a splendid time was had by all. Just sad we could not stay for the Sunday roast lunch and just missed out n the fitness class in the pool! Do hope to return Diana & Bonnie
