Great Stay with Spacious Rooms

We had a great stay at the Hotel Astoria. We were here as part of a cruise extension with Avalon waterways, so we had an included breakfast every morning with a ton of variety and choices. The room shapes were all unique, but they were all big enough for two people and two pieces of full sized luggage. The rooms actually exceeded my expectations in terms of space. They were also very clean. There was plenty of natural light, but also room-darkening curtains for nighttime. We weren't bothered by any external noise. We also found the front desk service to be very helpful. We had a broken room key that an employee offered to re-program and deliver back to our room for us. We were also able to call down to get new bottles of (complimentary) water each morning, as we had declined room service. The hotel was also in a great location- walking distance to the train station, a few bus stops, and the waterfront area. Overall, we really enjoyed our time at this hotel and would definitely recommend it to anyone traveling in this area.

Abhorrent, Inhumane Service by Manager Adam - Do Not Stay Here

Unacceptable and despicable treatment for a self proclaimed 4 star hotel. My 80 year-old disabled mother and I arrived exhausted after traveling on a night train. Due to a temporary credit card authorization delay, the Front of House Manager, ADAM, held us hostage in a suffocatingly hot lobby for 3 full hours. Instead of showing basic human empathy, helping us find an alternative solution for a booking that was already fully prepaid, or letting a senior citizen rest, Adam was profoundly disrespectful, condescending, and aggressively interrogated me about our medical insurance.Only after I completely lost my patience, confronted him about his abusive behavior toward a disabled elderly tourist, and explicitly promised him a scathing online review, his attitude suddenly shifted. He backed down, accepted a lower deposit (proving his initial psychological pressure was completely arbitrary), and suddenly tried to play the 'friendly host'. He even attempted to bribe us out of a bad review by offering complimentary fruits in our room and a free drink at the rooftop bar once 'everyone was calmer.'An absolute joke. A free drink does not erase three hours of elder abuse and psychological harassment. Adam never offered a genuine, formal apology. The city of Lucerne is beautiful, but the management at Hotel Astoria lacks basic human decency. Avoid at all costs, especially if traveling with elderly or vulnerable family members.

Friendly staff and awful hotel

We had a prepaid reservation at the Boutique Hotel Weisses Kreuz. We were a day late getting there and did not notify them until the morning of our arrival. When we arrived, tired from 16 hours of travel, to find that they had cancelled our booking, rented our room, and are keeping our money that we prepaid.
They did send us toi the Astoria Hotel saying that it would cost $795 E per night but when we got there they said about 1400 Euro per night. We asked about the quoted E 795 price and they said that was only if we booked online! We could manage the booking on our phones but the check in gal helped us to do it. Very weird.
We then ate at their Italian restaurant, La Cucina which was expensive and disappointingly mediocre. It was in the 90 degrees F and the air conditioner in our room barely functioned.
The room was quite small with no minifridge and no closet doors. No shampoo and conditioner - no lotion. Old towels.
The Thai restaurant was expensive but very very good and we found everyone on the staff helpful and friendly. The location is great - close to the train station and the Rosenberg Collection as well as Lucerne's old town. Not sure you could pay me to stay there again though.

Not as advertised

Upon arriving at the hotel you will notice the exterior leaves much to be desired. It appears shabby in its off white concrete that could use a bit of cleaning. A large, rather tacky and temporary looking plastic sign advertises the upstairs bar. To get to the front desk, you take stairs or a tiny elevator. The check in id describe as average to slightly aloof. It’s the type of place where the front desk staff seems to have a great rapport with each other, but less so with guests. Honestly, this lobby looks like something id expect to see for a conference center hotel, un-pleasing, thrown together and somewhat shabby. The hotel staff seems proud of it though.
Rooms: smallish which is fine but no closet doors, no mini fridge, and very low quality sheets. Very clean however so that’s good. I have several shirts that need an iron and there is no iron or board in room, when requested I was told it is a safety issue but they have an iron and board set up in a conference room I could use. Very odd, as of the 4 hotels we’ve stayed in across Europe they all have an iron. Most have a refrigerator and many of the much more budget rooms had much nicer bedding.
Honestly, my family and I were very disappointed in this hotel and would not recommend. We booked 2 rooms and they were each nearly $600 per night. Lucerne is expensive and I don’t mind paying for quality but this is not that.

Good stay

Smooth check in.
Our room was in the tower above the La Cucina restaurant.
Clean, compact room with comfortable beds, coffee machine, mini fridge, safe.
No USB chargers, bring adaptor.
Clean bathroom with basic amenities, very thin towels.
Two water bottles provided daily; thank you.
Breakfast:
In La Cucina restaurant downstairs for our group.
Restaurant has very nice decor.
Tea, coffee machine, juice, cereal.
Scrambled and boiled eggs and some hot food.
Fruit, pancakes, croissants, bread but no toaster.
Not bad, not impressive either.
Walking distance from town and train station, about 15 minutes.
Many restaurants and cafes in the area.
