Amazing!!

We spent 4 days in Zanzibar, at Matlai Boutique Hotel. It has been an incredible experience, due to the surroundings, the quality of the accommodation, the excellent food, the details, but especially because of the service, which is very, very exceptional. 24-hour butler service, discreet, correct, attentive, detail-oriented, polite, smiling... all of this makes you experience true luxury, the closest thing to having your own villa with service.
If you value Zanzibar and a tranquil and luxurious destination, do not hesitate, Matlai.

Great place to stay

A really nice hotel. We enjoyed our 4 night stay. We were booked on full board
They arranged a taxi to pick us up at Zanzibar Airport (I was impressed as our flight got in at 04.00 am) . It was a 90 minute ride to the hotel. There are currently a lot of road works en route, which are for some Indian Ocean Football tournament, and should be finished in under a year
We had 3 nights in the "hotel" villa , which has just 4 rooms. And 2 nights in the 2 room private villa. Both are in the same grounds, both were large and well appointed. They were well looked after by housekeeping. The 2 room villa is much more sumptuous, but that does not imply that the other rooms are not very good.
The other building on the complex is their restaurant which includes both international and Vietnamese food. The food was the weakest point of our stay. It was perfectly adequate, but did no reach the heights of the rooms and grounds. As another reviewer said, the restaurant is a bit dark and gloomy. Mind you at lunchtime you can eat outside fronting the long sandy beach
Guests have "butler service" . They seem to have 4 butlers, one of whom is rostered on duty all the time. We usually took breakfast our our room balcony, and lunch and dinner in the restaurant
This is Africa, so you do get vendors if you are on the beach. But they are not persistent, and congregate several hundred metres away round a large hotel. Walking past them, merely holding up a hand to say you were not interested was sufficient to see them off. In the hotel ground were not even approached by vendors. They did not impinge on my enjoyment of this hotel.
Overall we were extremely pleased with our stay a t Matlai, and would certainly return gain if we come back to Zanzibar

Just an okay experience - won’t return (sorry).

This hotel is just okay. We came on our honeymoon for the second part after being on a safari in Tanzania. We wanted to go to the Maldives but were under the illusion Zanzibar is the new upcoming Maldives’s and was a shorter flight from
Tanzania - so we went for it.
We were half board and stayed in one of the villas. There is 2 villas in the hotel and 4 bedrooms in the main hotel.
The roads to the hotel aren’t the best. And the road up to the hotel entrance, you think you’re going to somewhere not great. Pretty scary at night anyways. I don’t know how else to put it.
It takes around 1 hour and 30 mins to get to the hotel from the airport. Not one part of the journey was going through anything nice, just villages and towns where there is poverty and cars/bikes pipping at each each constantly so they don’t crash into each other.
You need to tip everyone by the way - even people who handle your luggage at the airport. Make sure you do or they hang around basically staring at you until you do. (Not pleasant).
You are greeted by the owners dogs, if you like dogs this is okay, but not the best of welcomes by dogs running around you after a long journey. We personally didnt appreciate it.
The hotel generally needs some money spent on it inside as outdated and run down. The outside looks good if you were looking at it from the beach though.
Food is just okay also. Nothing amazing. The breakfast was probably the better meal. We had fruit platters and scrambled eggs on toast or pancakes.
The hotel has a gym…. Everything is made out of wood and is outside. (Traditional) but not what we expected and didn’t use it.
The butler then went to take us to an outside shed to show us a bush baby. Which was inside there with the door shut, (to protect it apparently) but upon arrival is was lying flat on the floor dying, which wasn’t pleasant to see. The butler wasn’t to know this but it’s not what we wanted to see at all and was upsetting. Maybe the staff should check first before showing guests?
The electric goes on and off constantly. (Maybe the hotel should get a better generator? So guests aren’t affected.) The water for the shower goes off when the electric goes off also, so you may be left with body wash on you or shampoo in your hair for a period of time until it comes back on and when it does come back on it might be for 30 mins or 30 seconds, so you better hurry. Not relaxing. And if the electric goes off before bed time then you can be woken up to all the lights coming back on etc. or your phone not charged for the next day.
Internal doors within the premises make loud noises when being closed if they aren’t closed quietly or carefully, this can wake you up or disturb any relaxation.
The tv in the bedroom is a smart tv so you can watch YouTube or Netflix which is good. You also have aircon and a ceiling fan in the bedroom. The bathroom also has a ceiling fan.
The ladies in the spa are very good at their jobs and the spa is very relaxing and they do good massages. We had one every day. (Not much else to do at all around this area). Before a massage you have your feet in a warm fresh ginger and lime warm water bath and then they are massaged for 5 minutes or so, you also get given a cold lime water at the start and after the treatment a herbal tea and biscuit. The biscuit is yummy. Similar to shortbread.
As of the cleaners for your room are very good also, very thorough and friendly.
They are locals on the beach who pester you all the time and beg. Or even when you’re in the hotel premises they stand and stare at you relaxing/sun bathing and even start to shout up also. (See my picture). There is a lot of litter of the beach also from the locals. The hotel encourages you to pick up litter and dispose of it (there is a sign) what a way to spend your holiday, picking up after the locals. There isn’t much places to sun bathe as a lot of the places were in the shade, you can’t go onto the beach to sun bathe, as the locals would just pester you. Such a shame as the white sand is lovely. There is a swinging relaxing bed area with two beds on but they are not facing the beach, surely they should face the view?
You have two choices of pillows at bed time - 1) very lumpy or 2) a firm thicker one, we had the firm thicker one. The cleaners for the rooms are very friendly and are good at their jobs.
I ordered a mojito and there were fly eggs all over the mint, (likely don’t wash produce), so I left it as was put off. The restaurant for the hotel is very dark and old fashioned - not the best of environments for a meal in our opinion.
There was mould inside the reusable glass water bottle in our room, the hotel blamed the water company as the main water bottle “wasn’t sealed”, it wasn’t that, but they had to blame someone didn’t they. It was the fact they are not cleaned properly inside and left out at room temperature not in the fridge will of course grow mould. They can’t be cleaned properly inside as the neck of the bottle is so narrow. So this is inevitable. I did get a bad stomach and wondered why, I think this was potentially the reason.
The butler wanted in our room when we were there to check the mini bar and what we have used, surely he can check it another time or find a time when we are out of the room? That doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things but thought I would mention it as it was slightly annoying. But, the butlers are very good at their jobs otherwise and attentive.
We did actually go to another hotel called Breezes on our last day as we were getting fed up, which was just up the road. Maybe 5 mins in a taxi? - really good food (faultless), plenty to do and no locals pestering you for money, very clean and plenty of places to sunbathe. Abit more money, but worth it. We wish we knew about this place and went here instead.
We were offered a candle lit dinner on our last night to celebrate our honeymoon but we weren’t keen as we probably would have got pestered by the locals hanging around infront of us and also we just didn’t enjoy the food so we went Breezes and ate.
The bath in the room takes over an hour to fill and you need to keep turning it off so the hot water builds back up again.
On a whole, we wouldn’t come back here unfortunately and have left feeling quite disappointed. Maybe we as a couple just have higher standards? But this is just my honest review.
Sorry for this review as the staff are nice at the hotel, but Tripadvisor is for honesty.
Maybe Zanzibar as a location on a whole may be better in years to come as it is still in a lot of poverty generally but until then, we will just maybe go to the Maldives.

We will come back!

We stayed at the Matlai for the second time and again it was confirmed that it is the perfect hotel for us. It is wonderfully quiet, on a beautiful beach. Since it is quite lonely, you won't find so many beach vendors there and you can take a walk on the beach, swim at high tide or enjoy the peace and quiet by the pool. There are beautiful, shady places and you can relax. No “recliners”, no large groups of visitors and we enjoyed the luxury of swimming in the pool very early in the morning or late in the evening.
Breakfast is taken to the private terrace and at the other meals you can go to the on-site restaurant. There is a daily changing menu and if you don't like the selection, you can also order from the restaurant menu. The quality was really great throughout and we were wonderfully looked after. That's how we imagine holidays.
The rooms are large and all the furnishings, decoration, etc. are from dealers on site and there are so, so many little things thought of. Even the scent in the room can be chosen.
A little tip: As everywhere on Zanzibar, think of mosquito spray and bathing shoes. This is good advice and allows you to enter the sea without any problems, without fear of stepping into a shell or sea urchin.

Eure Tipps zu den Badeschuhen und dem Mückenspray sind zudem sehr hilfreich für andere Reisende – vielen Dank auch dafür!

Relaxing stay

Just returned from 2week stay at matlai and oh what a relaxing stay it was. Beautiful hotel which is kept spotless, food was excellent and as I am a coeliac my gluten free requirements were met at every mealtime ,the chef went out of his way to adapt anything on the menu which was extensive.
Our room was lovely and kept extremely clean, the butlers were always on hand to help out with anything. The massage treatments were also very good.
Meals could be taken anywhere (outside your room, in the garden or in the restaurant) which was lovely. So to summarise great holiday and a big thank you to all the staff who were all magnificent.

Dear guests,
Thank you so much for your kind words! We are thrilled to hear that you had such a relaxing two-week stay with us.
It was our absolute pleasure to ensure your gluten-free requirements were met; our Chef truly enjoys the opportunity to adapt our menu to make every guest feel cared for and safe. We are also glad you enjoyed the flexibility of our "dine anywhere" policy and the "magnificent" service from our butlers and spa team.
We truly appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you back to our spotless corner of paradise very soon!
Warm regards,
