Real or fake, Parody or the genuine article?
Before I went I couldn't decide, real or 'Disney'. Would I feel like it was a parody? The location is wonderful. The staff go out of their way, no doubt. We had the Nettlefold Grand Suite. It was lovely and yes, expensive, but this was bucket list.
Once the sea has come in and the mucky nosey day trippers depart the island it transforms into a time capsule. You could believe it was 100 years ago. Many men in black tie and women in ill fitting dinner gowns loving every moment of the the well made cocktails and, in the main dining room, the band playing the classics.
We ate in the Pilchard Inn which was solid pub food and a no dress code but excellent service. Its tiny inside but lovely and we were lucky it was quiet.
We ate in the Nettlefold second night and the food was good, not great, but unfortunately took 1 hour 30 mins to have the entree. The maître d' was very upset and was so helpful.
Breakfast was a joy in the Captains Table.
We sat one afternoon alone at the Mermaid Pool, one could imagine the ghosts of Churchill, Christie, Eisenhower next to you. A treat.
This is the real thing, evocative of the time period, service on point, meals high quality. Just go with the flow. The views unappareled
Criticism: There is only ONE room/suite in the entire hotel that has a real shower. This is a problem/ If its the summer and its HOT you do not want a bath and its a 2 shower day. The shower attachment on the bath is awkward and soaks the floor. Its not a 1930's thing, they had showers and at little cost and no plumbing the could hang a shower rail and around the free standing bath. Shame as its an easy fix, and if the Waldorf has them so can Burgh.

Anniversary Celebration

Birthday treat
A visit to this hotel is well worth the effort. If you like art deco, you are in for a real treat. The hotel looks a little tired, but the views are stunning and we were blessed with great weather.
The staff were all super polite and helpful and a credit to the hotel. Lunch was excellent, though dinner a little disappointing and not to the standard I would have expected. It's definitely an experience!

brilliant burgh island!
Absolutely love this place. You totally escape the fast world! and relax from the moment you arrive. the staff are amazing. The food is fabulous and the ball room! what a room, what a venue with the live band playing through dinner and the singer we have seen her a few times and she is just great! The beach house is great to chill in and the hot tub in the sunshine , with a glass of fizz in hand is fantastic!
