Bear of Burton stay
We had a fantastic stay at the Bear of Burton. We were upgraded to one of their suites - which was wonderful. Room was very clean and sumptuous. We also ate there and enjoyed some lovely meals. Would thoroughly recommend.

Disappointing, and really not acceptable
Some things done very well, and some things just not acceptable.
The good stuff, staff are friendly and helpful and the welcome extended to dogs and their owners is faultless. The cooked breakfast is delicious, the buffet pastries fantastic however the remaining buffet items were limited. The hotel was quiet and we largely had undisturbed sleep, except for the intermittent buzzing of the air-con unit.
The bad stuff, the room was dirty with clearly visible dust bunnies under the furniture. There was staining on the ceiling and an unfinished access hole cut into the ceiling, I suspect as part of the air-con installation. The blind in the bathroom was tattered and torn with the weight bar missing. The door hook in the bathroom was not secured and when used it fell away. The cold tap in the bathroom did not turn off and the tap leaked constantly.
There was very little space for clothing, just one small wardrobe and a desk drawer that could barely accommodate spectacle cases. On arrival we found a dress from the previous occupants hanging in the wardrobe. We requested additional clothes hangers which were provided promptly.
Some significant rebuilding work is being done on the patio area with a large section of decking removed and temporary barriers in place.
Access to the first floor bedrooms is via a steep staircase with two dog-leg turns. Anyone with mobility issues would find it challenging.
Our fridge wasn't replenished on one of the five days we stayed.
We only had one evening meal which was frankly dreadful. We both ordered the steak and ale pie. The pastry was very very hard and the filling was mostly gristle. The 'greens' served with the meal was better described as grey cabbage. No one checked to see if we were enjoying the meal and by the time the waitress came to clear our plates our dog had polished off the pies! The waitress did apologise for the quality of the meal and advised us that the pies were not made on the premises but were provided by the brewery.

Friendly staff, dog friendly, spacious
Very friendly staff, dog friendly. Nice coffee! Excellent breakfast. Lots of nice seating inside and outside. Feels quite spacious which is good when you have a dog. Never felt too busy as lots of space. Although we stayed during the week. Large carpark. The room was nice, with nice touches like illy coffee sachets, coffee machine & capsules, milk in the fridge, nice shortbread biscuits. Very comfortable bed. A few bad points, the air con system in room was noisy, they automatically add a service charge to your bill. Prices a bit on the high side, cocktails etc.. but overall it’s a good place to stay. Friendly staff. Tip.. there is a large recreation ground/community park less than 10 mins walk away to exercise your dog (Martins Hill recreation ground ) in the main village of burton, just a tiny bit up from the Oak Inn. The path to walk there is next to quite a busy road though. There is a front garden area at the Bear, if kept on a lead it’s fine. We would definitely return to The Bear of Burton.

Disappointed
This is definitely not the review I wanted to write, the Bear previously had great reviews and recommendations. However it’s gone down hill terribly, prices have gone through the roof and the quality and presentation of the food was appalling. The waitress was brilliant and the place is lovely but we’re never going back again it was so poor. Sad but true

Long weekend away
What a beautiful location! Very central to lots of lovely areas, very quiet but close to easy routes. Lovely staff and wonderful food. Really enjoyed the impromptu Shakespeare play on our 1st evening!
