My room was clean, of a good size and with a very comfortable bed. Without air conditioning, and during a heat wave, it was hot! However, a fan had been provided and was running when I arrived.
Without exception, the staff were friendly and always helpful.
Breakfast was adequate, although a greater variety of fresh fruit would have been welcome. The restaurant food was of a very high standard, but if you are fortunate enough to have a voucher, do not just show the waiter at the beginning of the meal. My waiter forgot to deduct the 40% and by the time I realised, cashing up had been done and I lost it.

Not sure what we did wrong….

Booked after seeing such great reviews, things went downhill from the minute we arrived. No one on check in but we waited patiently and a lovely member of staff said she would try and check us in, she was very polite and friendly. When she had almost finished the manager appeared and helped her finish, he didnt even speak to us or greet us and I had to ask where to go to get to our room. On the way up we had the misfortune of hearing the chef’s opinions of customers ( we cancelled our dinner plans). The room as we walked in looked lovely, clean sheets, bright room. Then we went in the bathroom, which had clearly been forgotten during cleaning. The sink had ‘bits’ in it and the plug was in with some kind brown liquid. The tiles over the bath were filthy, pink/brown sludge came off in my hand from the grout, no one had clearly ever cleaned behind the door and the was a suspicious brown stain by the light switch. Uncovered hot water pipes not exactly safe for anyone travelling with kids and enough dust on the towel rail we decided not to use the towels. The bin in the room had not been emptied and we found someone else’s litter on the floor. The cups were dirty, teaspoons sticky and some suspicious marks on the carpet. Not sure what we did wrong to deserve this room but really disappointed.

Average

Historic hotel, quirky and in a good location. Stayed 2 nights in the old/original part of the hotel, those rooms numbered 1-27. We were directed up 2+ flights of stairs to reach those, even though there was a lift!
It was during the heatwave with no air con, we were given a fan but it must have been 35+ degrees in those rooms, I tried all the usual hacks to cool that room down but nothing worked, it was unbearable.
A mobile air con unit could be placed on this 3rd floor, which would have helped, there was one downstairs in the pub which was the coolest place in the building.
On the 3rd night we were given a room in the newer part of the hotel, rooms numbered 101 upwards, what a difference in the temperature.
Overall an average stay which was to a budget.

dissappointed

A booking at 7.15 pm .... we were located in bar area maybe because we had a dog not sure why. food quality was good but service very poor we felt isolated as not in restaurant area so outlayers. starter was served relatively quickly but then 90mins till main served and we had to chase staff for info on when it would arrive. we asked to order desserts and told kitchen closed we mentioned the food was so slow and they agreed to take our dessert order. Again after 30mins we canceled desserts and paid bill. we were so dissappointed in the service and whole experience .... would not visit again usually a place we visit when in exeter no more

Average accommodation

Stayed one night. Check-in was quick and easy and receptionist friendly and helpful. The room itself was average at best. It was very dated and the bathroom showed signs of mould in areas around the bath. The shampoo etc was clearly watered down. There is no air con so the room was a little stuffy and warm. There was a stain in the carpet. Pillows also too soft. The breakfast was not great. Bacon was thin and overcooked. Buffet very limited and not refilled when things ran out. The hotel itself is dated and needs a refresh. The pub was expensive and visitors should note there is a very nice pub directly opposite with drinks half the price. On a positive note it is an excellent location, staff were friendly and the building itself is quirky and interesting. However , work is needed to modernise the interior.
