A nostalgic and complete experience
I just wanted to send a massive THANK YOU to all the staff at Soar Mill cove for creating an unforgettable weekend for my family. It was a very special occasion, and Devon holds a fond and nostalgic place in our hearts as our childhood home, so being able to come back together years later and experience what Devon has to offer has been one of joy, fond memories rekindled, and laughter- something the staff at Soar Mill ensured we would receive.
From Amanda making sure we had everything we needed, to the restaurant staff tending to our every need (and cleaning up after our messy children! Sorry!), the bartender who delighted us with his knowledge and local drinks, the housekeeper who tirelessly ensured our rooms were spotless (and whilst we were at breakfast! Amazing!) and even the reservation staff for helping organise a large group (thank you Mollie!). Everyone involved made sure we were taken care of.
The hotel itself is wonderful, we adored walking to the beach, the dog washing area was an appreciated benefit! The food at dinner was exemplary- truly a birthday treat for my mum.
A special shoutout to Wanda, she treated me and my mum to facials on Saturday and the most incredible shoulder massage. I have spa treatments regularly and can say this was one of the top experiences. My mother is very picky with treatments and dubbed this ‘the best treatment ever’ which is saying A LOT as my mum can be very hard to please!
Charging to the room was simple, the car charging was equally simple and incredibly valuable (although would recommend if you can to get more chargers!) and loved having communal spaces to enjoy coffee and lunches (and late night drinks!), particularly love the kids toys available too.

In desperate need of a refurb…
The only reason this review isn’t one star for every aspect is because the location is undeniably beautiful. The setting and coastal views are stunning, but unfortunately that’s where the positives ended for us.
My husband and I booked a three-night stay for our honeymoon, paying around £270 per night. The hotel was aware that this was our honeymoon, so we arrived expecting a memorable and relaxing experience. Sadly, it was anything but.
On arrival we were allocated Room 7 in the main part of the hotel, and we were genuinely shocked. The room was incredibly tired, dated and in desperate need of refurbishment. The bathroom had no window and no working extractor fan, leaving it feeling damp and unpleasant. The shower consisted of an overhead shower with a flimsy, stained shower curtain that appeared old and was rusty, making it feel more like a budget motel than a hotel charging premium prices. The side bath has mouldy mastic.
The bedroom itself was equally disappointing. The only natural light came from sliding patio doors, and there was no proper ventilation. We had to request a fan, but the one provided was so weak it barely circulated any air at all.
What was described as a ‘garden view with garden furniture’ was simply not what we found. There was no garden furniture, and the view was of overgrown bushes and weeds rather than a maintained garden. It felt misleading and certainly didn’t reflect what had been advertised.
Within minutes of entering the room, we knew we couldn’t stay there. It was simply not of an acceptable standard for a honeymoon or for the price we had paid. We requested a full refund and explained we could not stay there - which the next day was agreed to.

As part of our refurbishment plans, this particular room will be taken out of service and upgraded as part of our wider investment programme. Listen to your guests and don’t book room 11
DO NOT accept room 11 if allocated. During our stay it was unbearably hot (an issue they are aware of but haven’t fixed) which led to difficult sleep and disturbed nights. We were given this room for our family of 3 (inc our 5 yr old daughter) and Labrador along with a defunct fan and no fridge. The fan was changed day 2 and a fridge found but it didn’t change the temperature or help us feel comfortable at all. On top of the already crazy room temp (no thermometer but easily 30+) - the bathroom towel rail was on full pelt - which seemed totally nonsensical! I appreciate the hotel can’t control the weather BUT they could install aircon and or listen to their guests when they say it’s too hot to sleep in. We were NOT offered an alternative room and on asking again this evening for a mobile air circ unit or something we were told nothing is available - they are aware of the problem and are installing air con NEXT YEAR.
So if they know it’s an issue with this particular room, why were we checked into it??? Especially given a heatwave was forecast, it’s irresponsible at best, neglectful and profiteering at worst.
The swimming pool is a welcome relief when you’re in it but there’s damp issues, rusty door stops, and not enough chairs. The water dispenser doesn’t have any water in it or at least wasn’t sorted in the 4 days we were there, (make do with the jug of warm tap water on the side).
The restaurant staff were lovely and one receptionist an absolute delight.
Many reviews point out the dated decor, and constructively this is very fair. There’s a lot of warn carpet and in rooms that just don’t make sense (WC for example) and would be relatively easy and inexpensive to sort.
The jewel in the crown is the beach - but DEFINITELY not room 11, or THE SAUNA as we called it. During our stay I searched ‘legal max temp for hotels’ and do you know there isn’t legislation for it, but there should be, and if the max was a toasty 25• I’d say we were easily 5• above that and I am being generous.
So if they know it’s an issue with this particular room, why were we checked into it??? Especially given a heatwave was forecast, it’s irresponsible at best, neglectful and profiteering at worst.

Short break at Soar Mill Cove
We recently spent 4 nights at Soar Mill Cove and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Everything about the hotel was fantastic. Soar Mill's location is beautiful and secluded, our room the Hideaway was perfect. The food was excellent - we ate dinner there each night and were never disappointed. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice. Perhaps best of all the staff. Everyone was friendly, helpful and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble.
We didn't use the facilities e.g. the pool as we were out walking everyday but we are sure they were of the same standard as everything else. In short we would definitely recommend this hotel and will come back sometime I'm sure

Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting
Didn’t stay but parked here before a trip to the nearby cove then stopped off for a drink after with my parents & toddlers. Hotel looked amazing and well looked after. Only spoke to two staff - nice lady behind the desk and the barman who served us on the terrace was so friendly. Based on this would recommend to anyone
