Hospital visitor

I stayed at Newton House while my husband was taken ill and admitted to ICU at Torbay Hospital while we were in the area. It is a family run guest house with the feel that you are staying in someone's home which was exactly what I needed during such a difficult and stressful time, but equally I was left alone after a long day at the hospital. I can't comment on breakfast as I stayed on a room only basis as I was going up to the hospital at 7.45am every morning. This guest house is ideally located for Torbay Hospital, being a 5 minute drive or 25 minute walk up a main road.

Very unwelcoming, rude, mouldy coffee & milk and full of ridiculous rules

An awful stay. Would rate it 0 if I could. We visited with 2 year old baby. The owner was very rude and he had a few totally insane rules. After we booked & paid they sent us a passive aggressive email saying that no people under 30 are welcomed... We were like the what is it a joke? On the day of our visit he asked me if I am not under 30. I am 38 I inquired why do they have such a ridiculous rule? Then I had to listed to lots of nonsense that younger people drink more and such and such and then he said they have another stupid rule. No eating in the room. Like what? I couldnt believe and asked if they are for real. Then he said that this is very strict rule and if he sees us with food he will kick us out. Lol! What a bloke! He would kick us out with a little baby in the middle of a night! Heartless thing to say! What a warm welcome!!! The last night of our stay we went to a proper hotel. Very unwelcoming! To add insult to injury - the sheets were dirty and the property and the room had a musty smell. Also coffee bag provided was hard, mouldy inside - black in colour and milk was like 14 years old!!!! Photos provided. I would strongly advise against eating in there. Sanepid should really look into this place

Thankyou for your childish review you obviously can bot read dates on sealed tea and coffee and milk in sealed cartons .you obviously have bad eye sight as all our rooms do not have tables ,knife and forks plates .you do not like rules .the age under 30 is set due to under that age we have has issues with not you and an email does go out to everyone that books which is polite .personally I think you should take a look in the mirror at yourself seeing as you think you are entitled to do what you want reading your review.

An ideally situated gem of a family run guest house.

Out of all the places I have stayed around the world, I have never had as friendly a reception as from the owner at the Newton House. If you go to this hotel expecting a 5* hotel, then you will be disappointed. However, if you go expecting it to be what it is - a family run guest house - then you are in for a treat. The rooms are clean, functional and (as I said earlier) the owners are knowledgeable and very friendly. It was akin to staying in someone's home rather than a guest house. Location is great - a 2 minute walk from the beautiful grade II listed Torre station where you can catch a train in to Torquay, Paignton or further afield, or the number 12 Stagecoach bus to Torquay (and Brixham) stops just outside. Or, if the weather is nice, it's about a 15 minute walk down to the beach. We didn't have breakfast as we didn't have time during our far too brief stay, but there's always next time; we will be back as and when the wind blows us to Devon again.

Avoid this guest house as the owner has strange fetishes going through personal belongings and underwear when your not there .

On arrival we had to wait 15 minutes for the door to be answered,then got told to move our car for no reason we were perfectly parked .. We booked 2 double rooms and on arrival got a double and a twin .no apologies for this .he seemed to find it amusing .
Got shown to our rooms and unpacked.the guests in the twin room pushed the beds together and started to unpack ,
We went out to find somewhere to eat and were gone no more than 90 minutes .we got back to guest house and went to settle for the night .
My daughter and partner then came and informed us of a shocking discovery .the beds had been moved ,all their luggage was tampered with including underwear ,things had been moved ,and to top it off whoever came In the room took a snack with them and left the empty packet on the bed along with a passive agressive note about moving the beds stating the fire exit was behind them .the fire exit instructions were on the door of the entry to the room indicating that way to fire exit down the corridor.
Now if the other door is to be classed as a fire exit ,it has to have a double strength system with appropriate handle .this was a half glazed single door upv bottom and was locked with no key . It also said if we didn't like we should leave .
We were so shocked someone had been through their things and even been in their room it was an invasion of privacy .
My daughter pulled furniture across the door she was so scared he was going to come in during g the night we had no option but to stay that night .
We booked another hotel which was not easy on a bank holiday and we stayed that night,there was a creaky floor on the corridor we were on which only had their room and ours, we heard him wandering up and down at night .
We left the next morning after explaining clearly why and we requested our money back for the nights we both hadn't stayed
This is when he turned nasty and told us we would never get any . He made a real show in front of the other guest going to breakfast .
We checked later and he had already let the rooms so it wasn't him out of pocket he got paid twice for both rooms .
We are taking him to the small claims court but would warn anyone staying here that you have no privacy re rooms they can and will enter at any time they please .
We should have rung the police re the strange fetish with customers items but are taking legal advice on that matter
We photographed our rooms after he'd been in and before we left to show we did no damage or left a mess as this could be the only recourse he could take .please check reviews on other booking sites we are not the only ones .

First of all we were buisy so parking will be tight and your husband made the booking and they were the rooms available when you booked if it was not what you wanted why book in the first place why would I apologise for what you booked .you had issues with your health which is why you swapped with your daughter to have the double bed.while myself and my daughter were having a nice conversation with you all we could hear was noises next door which was your daughter and boyfriend.we had suspicion what they were doing.so yes we investigated when you went out to find the beds moved and other furniture too ,the beds were blocking a fire exit a door that is double glazed but still a fire exit under health and safety regulations you can lock a door but not block a door especially on the inside.so the beds were put back as they are not designed to be put together for that very reason. We left you a note in the room which was polite and only suggested if you want a double bed then to book elsewhere as we had no other rooms available being the bank holiday. Not to move our furniture and our number if you had a problem with it but heard nothing until the following morning when you decided to leave you were not thrown out.the boyfriend thought it was normal to other people's property about in a property that you or your daughters boyfriend owns.we have taken photos before myself and daughter put the room back as it should of been .none of their belongings was touched and the rooms were not let out again as they were booked to you on Expedia and we have let Expedia know what you did .please take us to court we need a laugh.when you left you forgot your life threatening pills so your daughter states yet we did not get a phone call till the evening from your daughter to collect them and then suggested we leave your pills outside for anyone to take what a great idea from supposed normal couple .so no we did not leave them outside.if your going to leave a review and say for others to look get your facts straight first as like all b&bs and hotels there are rules ,health and safety, fire regulations in force ,you do not have a right to do what you want just because you have paid in property that is not owned by you .

Get away!

Lovely Guest House! Situated near the town, convenient for commuters with a railway station nearby! Nicely re-decorated rooms, comfy and spacious. Great selection for breakfast! Hosts warm, friendly and approachable! Highly recommended! Thanks for a lovely stay! The Clarks.
